A frequent sight along the Interstate highways in the South are those 90-
foot-tall+ signs for the "La Quinta Motor Inn". They are particularly
prevalent in Texas, which I think is where the motel chain is based.

Does anyone know the proper way to pronounce the name La Quinta? I've
heard three ways of doing so:

1) The phonetic pronounciation of "la-kwin-ta".

2) "la-keen-ta"

3) "la-kee-ta"

The proper pronunciation would be somewhere between 2 and 3 (with the 'n'
sound barely registering). But then, these here are the United States of
America, and we pronounce things different, hear? So the popular
pronunciation would defintely be 1.

What do I win?

How about calling their 800 number and see how they do it? As I
recall, the last time I called, it was "la kin-ta" with a long i.
Almost like la-keen-ta.

I thought it was Spanish for "Cracker Barrel". <g> Aside: It actually
translates as "The Fifth". Which opens a whole bunch more questions...
The Fifth What?

The few times I have called 1-800-WE'RE-FULLY-BOOKED it has been pronounced
#2, the proper Spanish pronounciation.

Texas may be the #1 butcherer, but Coloraydo is #2 (Byoona Vista, my ass!),
and California is #3 (La Ciudad De Nuestra Señora La Reina De Los Angeles
De Porciuncula).

Later,

Heh. Around the Atlanta area and points eastward (at least, to
Columbia or Charlotte), it seems to be Spanish for "behind the
Cracker Barrel".

I guess it's better than "*over* a (Cracker) Barrel". :-)

Depends where you are. In Texas, it's la-keenta, in New Hampshire,
it's la-kwinta, pronounced to rhyme with winter. BTDT.

I used to think it was "la kwinta" before I heard a radio announcement for a local one. x^)

Please note the original post was from 17 years ago.

That said I don't blame people for #1. This tends to happen when a
foreign word is crammed into English.

Maybe the answer is different now.

FWIW, I've always pronounced it (incorrectly) as #1. Not that I've ever
really had to use it in conversation; I'd say the incorrect pronounciation
was really only in my head.

But, I happened to see a commercial for the chain on TV recently, and they
do, indeed, pronounce it as #2.

P.S. I have no idea where #3 comes from.
