EAST CHICAGO, Ind. - Drivers are having to navigate around a four-
mile section of a northwestern Indiana expressway that the state
highway agency has closed for at least six weeks because of bridge
damage.

The closed expressway carries Indiana 912, known locally as Cline
Avenue, from U.S. 41 in Hammond over the Indiana Harbor Canal near the
ArcelorMittal steel mill in East Chicago.

The road was ordered closed on Friday so that a detailed evaluation
can be made of the bridge structure. Indiana Department of
Transportation spokeswoman Angie Fegaras says inspectors found
significant damage where the more than 70-foot-tall concrete and steel
piers meet the bridge deck.

Even if traveling along Cline is not as we'd like it right now, the
process worked. Government built a big elevated road where travel
moved smoothly for 23 years

These "stilt-ways" have a record of early failure, the Dan Ryan bridge
sank in the 1970s.
