This makes sense. Either naming I 78 or I-80 (preferrably I-80) instand of
I-495 on Long Island. It would eliminate confusion and get rid of the many
3 digit interstate numbers in the NYC area. It think it would be neat and
extend the famous Interstate 80 another 100 miles. What do you think? No
one has though of this that I can tell on the 'net. I feel it makes sense

I agree, and the GSP between l-287 and NYS Thruway can became l-487 or l-687
or even l-887
one day I even suggest to extend l-97 from Baltimore,Multiplexed with l-95
to Wilmington, cross the Delaware memorial bridge and use the unumumered gap
of NJ Tpk between exit 1 and exit 6(PA Tpk is now when l-95 will use a bit a
PA Tpk to reach NJ Tpk,
I even suggested to extend l-70 via NJ Tpk up to the meet of l-95 at exit 6
or at the archives someboby mentionned to extend l-85 up to Philly and via
NE PA Tpk to replace l-95 in Philly

I was also thinking of multiplex l-70 with l-95 up to Wilmington and than to

with l-95 to the GW Bridge,Cross-Bronx Expwy,Throgs-Necks bridge and l-70
can be multiplexed with a the
l-80 proposal on the Long Island Expwy, if l-80 is multiplexed with
l-90 from Gary to Cleveland, why not with l-70?

How about this? Make the LIE I-78 and multi-plex I-80 with I-95
from its present terminus in Teaneck NJ east to Providence RI then with
I-195 in Massachusetts, maybe even with the freeway east of that point
to Buzzards Bay.

Another thing about designating the GSP as an interstate that would
be unique: trucks larger than pick ups are not permitted north of the
Raritan River. So would it then be the only interstate highway where
big trucks were banned?

This is interesting. You also once posted on early plans for Pennsylvania
Interstates and a northern I-85. Do you know of any other long forgotten

Yet another thing about the Garden State Parkway as an interstate that would
not necessarily be unique in New Jersey, but would be a particular pain on
an Interstate highway: stoplights. There are two or three of them on the
Parkway in Cape May County.

I-87 could easily exit off the Thruway onto the GSP, leaving I-86 to
run to the South Bronx, but I'm not thrilled with such an approach.
> How about this? Make the LIE I-78
Um -- how does it get there? I-78 ends at the Holland Tunnel. There
is and will never be an expressway connecting the Holland Tunnel and
Brooklyn (sorry, Bob Moses). I suppose I-78 could hop onto I-287 and
follow that to I-80 and then follow the extended I-80 I proposed a few
days ago, but then the remainder of I-78 would be relegated to 3di
status and, worse, the single logical highway that runs east-west
across the state would be split in two. (This is one point in favor
of extending I-80 across the GWB to wherever it may end up going: the
single highway that runs east-west across the state from the Delaware
Water Gap to the GWB does exit off itself a few miles from its
terminus.)

Don't forget the short bit of I-278 routed along the Grand Central
Parkway, between the Triboro Bridge and the BQE.
I-66 inside the Capital Beltway is banned to trucks too.

I like the I-76 routing.
Putting I-87 on the Garden State, however, makes absolutely no sense, for
several reasons. The two most obvious reasons are (a) trucks and (b) there is
something better that can be done with I-87 in the New York metro area. Read
on for (b).

Dino:
You must be new to this newsgroup if you think this hasn't been discussed
around these parts. The whole mess of Interstate numbering in and around NYC
should be changed. With the completion of I-287 and the designation of NY 17
as I-86, here are my suggestions (one more time).
I-87: Heading south, I-87 leaves the Thruway at exit 15, then follows the
present I-287 into New Jersey, ending at the Garden State Parkway (exit 127).
New I-86: Instead of ending in Harriman, I-86 joins the NY Thruway,
multiplexed with I-87 to Suffern, then takes over the routing of I-287 across
the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Cross Westchester Expressway. I-86 would then
end at I-95 in Port Chester.
New I-80: Yeah, this is a great highway and it shouldn't end in Teaneck, NJ,
as much as I like Teaneck. I would multiplex I-80 with I-95 to Providence, RI,
then let I-80 extend along what is now I-195 east to the Bourne Bridge at the
gateway to Cape Cod. Why the multiiplex? Simple. It addresses the fiction of
I-95 as a NORTH-SOUTH route in Connecticut, where it really runs east-west.
This stretch would be more accurately signed EAST 80, NORTH 95 (vice versa on
opposite lanes) .
Then we get around to cleaning up the 3-di situation around NYC. I-495 is so
steeped in traffic nightmare lore that I am reluctant to change the number, but
making it I-395 would make some sense, especially if I-395 begins at Exit 13
on the NJ Turnpike, then follows the present I-278 routing (Staten Island and
BQE) to the present interchange with the LIE.
The present Deegan-Thruway link from the Cross Westchester south, across the
Triboro Bridge, and onto the BQE (either to the LIE or all the way to NJ) could
be I-186.
I-278 in the Bronx becomes I-995.
NEW ENGLAND:
Seeing that we got into New England with my I-80 extension, here are a few more
changes... seeing that the sign crews are already working overtime.
What's with I-395, I-290, and I-190? Head from the CT state line north to
Leominster, MA and you need an atlas to keep track of the route changes. Pick
one and make it stick. I favor I-190.
That stretch of (former) 128 east of the I-95 southern junction in Canton makes
no sense, marked as US1 and I-93 north-south. People call that stretch
"128"and the exit numbering makes giving driving directions around there
impossible, especially for the natives. My solution would be to let I-93
follow the present MA-3 south to the Sagamore Bridge. Meanwhile, that little
east-west stretch between Canton and Braintree could become I-193 east-west.
Then you establish I-180 to run from the Braintree split across the old 128 and
down MA-24 south to Fall River, connecting to the former I-195, since
renumbered I-80.

The Long Island Expressway from the Queens Midtown Tunnel (QMT) to the
Clearview Expressway (currently I-295) could be redesignated to I-387.
Interstate 80 could be extended to Riverhead on Long Island (eventually
Montauk). It would be multiplexed with I-95 over the George Washington
Bridge (GWB). Then it would pick the Cross Bronx Expressway. After that it
would follow the Cross Bronx to I-295, cross the Throngs Neck Bridge, pickup
the Clearview Expressway, and continue to the Long Island Expressway. East
of (the current I-295) the Clearview Expressway the Long Island Expressway
would be redesignated as I-80. If the LIE ever got extended to Montauk
Point then it would be almost the perfect transcontinental Interstate since
it ends in San Francisco only a few from the Pacific Ocean -- Atlantic to
Pacific. Extending I-80 would probably make it the longest Interstate in
the country eclipsing I-90 which goes from Boston on the East to Seattle on
the West.
The Bruckner could be redesignated ot I-380, since it goes away from the
proposed redesignated I-80. The Sheridan Expressway (currently I-895) would
lose its designation because I feel it is to short to be an Interstate.
I-678 would be redesignated to be I-180 since it goes from the proposed
extension of I-80.
Now to New Jersey.
I-76 should be exteneded to Atlantic City. Being that AC is major resort
town. AC currently has no Interstate to serve it. I-76, then would be
multiplexed with the AC Expressway which currently does not have a number.
With this redesignation, they could also try to reconfigure the interchange
at I-76/I-295/NJ 42. With the I-76 designation, NJ 55 could be designated
as I-576.
The Garden State Parkway would not make a good extension for I-87 becuase
because it excludes trucks north of Exit 105 - Eatontown.

I will pose this question, and wish to hear opinions.
If the Parkway were upgraded to an Interstate, would that increase traffic
on the road? Also by upgrading it to an Interstate would that abolish the
toll?
Along with the question, consider also it is summer, a very hot summer here.
If so, then calm down. More than likely, these suggestions have been taken
under consideration by the City of New York, New York State Department of
Transportation, and other DOT's.
Honestly, I'd like to see I-87 enter New Jersey. At this time, I'd like to see
it take over I-287's routing in New Jersey, since it's a good highway, and a
nice way to bypass the mess of Urban New York. Unless we could EVER convince
the NIMBY's that an interstate will make things better for Mercer County and
Sommerset County, I'd like to see it end at the New Jersey Turnpike for now.
IF the NIMBY's ever changed their mind, Then have it take over I-95's routing
right up to the PA Turnpike, since Philadelphia Road geeks won't give up I-95
to the New Jersey Turnpike WITHOUT a fight.
Currently, I-287 is Multiplexed with I-87 up to Tarrytown [near the Tappan
Zee]. Where I-287 would break off I-87, have I-287 stay 287, but have the
remainder of the New York Thruway, and the Major Deegan become I-187.
I-76 should be able to continue to the coast of New Jersey, and if it's able
to, take over the ACE, like it's been mentioned on this newsgroup thousands of
times.

Indeed. This has been true since it was built in the fifties (as US 50).
I don't know if roads built as interstates are allowed to ban trucks, but
this one wasn't.

I-66 inside the Capital Beltway (I-495) was built as an Interstate, and
was off-limits to large trucks from the very beginning.

Another proposal was floated between 1964 and 1975 for a toll expressway
on new right-of-way that would connect the New Jersey Turnpike in South
Brunswick with the Garden State Parkway in Toms River. The Alfred E.
Driscoll Expressway, which would have been built by the New Jersey
Turnpike Authority, would have created a continuous express route for
commercial vehicles between northern and southeast New Jersey.
I've created a new page that describes this proposal in full detail:

The last I knew, the only thing restricted on the northern half of the GSP

I-287. It was designed prior to the Interstate System coming into being
specifically for that purpose - the Turnpike to Thruway Connector or some
such name was its original, pre-Interstate, designation.
