Who was "Pennyrile" anyway?
Jon
The WK has been renamed the "Wendell H. Ford Parkway." The WK part ,
according to the official map, has been dropped. The Purchase Parkway hasn't
been changed, yet.

Kentucky's major geographical regions (correct me if I'm wrong) are the
Eastern Hills, the Central Bluegrass, the Knobs (a horseshoe-shaped chain of
hills that surrounds the Bluegrass and includes Louisville), the South
Central Highlands, the Pennyroyal/Pennyrile, and the Jackson Purchase.
I knew those Kentucky History lessons I had back in fourth grade would pay
off one day! :)

At least you didn't mention Harland Sanders...

They oughta name something for Curtis Mayfield, if they haven't already. Though as
goes a highway, I don't know...a municipal road, perhaps...

Irvin S. Cobb does have a road named after him: Irvin Cobb Drive in Paducah
(US 60/62)

The Cumberland Parkway has also been renamed for Louie B. Nunn,
Kentucky's last Republican governor. Nunn's from Barren County,
through which the Cumberland Parkway travels, and he's the governor
who saw to it that this parkway (which runs through a depressed area
which tends to vote GOP) was built in the late 1960s.
I haven't seen any signs for these new routes. Last time I was in the
vicinity of the Pennyrile, they were getting ready to do a sign
replacement project. The posts were in the ground on the intersecting
highways for new signs -- hope they waited to put up new Breathitt
Parkway signs, instead of erecting Pennyrile signs and then having to
replace them.
I still say the best way to have done this would have been to install
auxiliary plates, like was done for the Bert T. Combs Mountain
Parkway. That way the parkways are still named for the geographical
areas they traverse (Cumberland, Green River, Pennyrile, Western
Kentucky) and not for the politicians honored (Nunn, Natcher,
Breathitt and Ford).

Renamed: Mountain Parkway (to Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway),
Cumberland (to Louie B. Nunn), Western Kentucky (to Wendell H. Ford
Western Kentucky Parkway), Green River (to William H. Natcher), and
now Pennyrile.
Name dropped: Kentucky Turnpike
Not renamed: Daniel Boone, Audubon, Blue Grass and Purchase.

If they ever rename the Purchase Parkway, it'll probably be for Cobb
(since there's already a Lake Barkley).
The new four-lane US 68 between Bowling Green and Hoptown more than
makes up for any proposed parkway, except for the 55 mph limit.

Being that the Blue Grass Parkway runs through or near Lincoln Country
in Kentucky, maybe they'll rename it for him, since they're so bent on
renaming the parkways.

Isn't the Pennyroyal a flower that grows in the Pennyrile region?
What can we citizens do to keep the original name in use?
-- Buster <http://www.rev.net/people/aloe/transportation>
>What can we citizens do to keep the original name in use?
When Kentucky named the Mountain Parkway for Gov. Bert T. Combs, they
added little auxiliary plates above the traditional signs with the
governor's name on them.
However, when the Green River Parkway was renamed for William H.
Natcher, they came up with completely new signs and totally deleted
references to the old name.
When the Western Kentucky Parkway was renamed for Wendell H. Ford, a
new sign was created with both names on it.
The Cumberland Parkway was renamed for Gov. Louie B. Nunn, and for
those signs they adopted the old Mountain Parkway practice and put up
auxiliary signs.
I don't know what was done WRT Breathitt and the Pennyrile Parkway, as
I haven't seen the new signs.
