Which airports have you been to, categorized by Departure/Arrival; Layover;
Pick-up/Dropoff; and Just For Fun?
The catch is you have to know the three letter code, without looking. Or at
least without TOO much looking.

Departure/Arrival
-----------------
MHT (Manchester, NH)
BOS (Boston, MA)
PVD (Warwick, RI aka "Providence")
BDL (Windsor Locks, CT aka "Hartford/Springfield")
LGA (New York, NY)

EWR (Newark, NJ)
BWI (Linthicum, MD aka "Baltimore/Washington")
DCA (Arlington, VA aka "Washington")
IAD (Dulles, VA aka "Washington")
RDU (Raleigh, NC aka "Raleigh/Durham")
ATL (Atlanta, GA)
MCO (Orlando, FL)
PBI (West Palm Beach, FL)
FLL (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
DTW (Wayne County, MI aka "Detroit")

DEN (Denver, CO)
LAS (Las Vegas, NV)

MAD (Madrid, Spain)

Layovers (not including those already listed above)
--------

Number of airports I've been to for commercial flights: 0.

I've been on a couple of noncommercial flights based at LUK (Lunken
Airport in Cincinnati), but that's it.

Does a helicopter ride count as a flight?

Departure/Arrival: SMF, DFW, MSO, BHM, Long Beach (don't know the code)

Dropoff: OAK

Layover: SEA, DEN, SLC

My favorite airports: SLC, DEN - very easy to get around and change planes
My least favorite: SEA - very difficult to get around and change planes.
When you have to go through security again to get to the other side of the
main terminal building, as I did, something is very wrong with the layout,
IMO.

Of course, not all airports *have* three-letter codes; the
International Standard is for four-letter codes. Be that as it may,
my list is still not particularly impressive:

Arrivals and Departures:

BTV (Burlington, Vermont)
MCO (Orlando/ex-McCoy Field)
MDT (Harrisburg, Penna.)
YMX (Montreal/Mirabel)
MBJ (Montego Bay, Jamaica)
CDG (Paris/Charles de Gaulle)

HEL (Helsinki, Finland)
BWI (Baltimore-Washington)
BOS (Boston/Logan)
DCA (Washington/National)
RNO (Reno/Tahoe)
SFO (San Francisco)
RDU (Raleigh-Durham)
LAS (Las Vegas/McCarran)
SEA (Seattle/Tacoma)
MSY (New Orleans/Mousaint)
CVG (Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky)
MHT (Manchester, N.H.)
SAN (San Diego)
MIA (Miami)
[next month will add BNA (Nashville)]

Connected through:

ATL (Atlanta) [DL]
BOS (Boston/Logan) [US]
BWI (Baltimore-Washington) [US]
CLT (Charlotte/Douglas) [US]
DEN (Denver/Stapleton) [UA]
DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth) [AA]
EWR (New York/Newark) [CO]
IAD (Washington/Dulles) [UA]

LAS (Las Vegas/McCarran) [HP]
LGA (New York/La Guardia) [TW->US]
ORD (Chicago/O'Hare [ex-Orchard Field]) [UA]
PIT (Pittsburgh, old) [US]
STL (St. Louis/Lambert) [TW]

Conducted business at:

BDL (Hartford/Bradley)
BFI (Seattle/King County [Boeing Field])
ROC (Rochester/Monroe County)
EYW (Key West)

Drove past:

PLB (Plattsburgh, N.Y.)
YUL (Montreal/Mirabel)
YYZ (Toronto/Pearson)
RWI (Rocky Mount/Wilson)
PWM (Portland, Maine)
BGR (Bangor, Maine)
OAK (Oakland, Calif.)
SJC (San Jose, Calif.)
MTH (Marathon, Fla.)
HVN (New Haven, Conn.)
PVD (Providence, R.I.)
BED (Bedford/Hanscom Field)
43KY (WLKY-TV studio heliport)
[OK, I cheated on that one.]

[Probably a lot more that I don't have specific recollection of.]

Ok, I'll chime in:

Ottawa International (many years ago in a light plane, landed to pass customs)
Buffalo International (same trip coming back from Quebec, landed for customs)
Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena, Burbank CA (noise abatement, steep climb out)
Sky Harbor-Phoenix International (older airport, very well maintained, nice)
SeaTac, Seattle WA (more times than I can count, way too small)
Denver International (gorgeous, in the middle of nowhere)
Albuquerque Sunport (part of Kirkland AFB, drum tight security)
Robert Mueller Regional, Austin TX (closed the next day, VERY short runway)
Bergstrom International, Austin TX (best airport I ever had, also an old AFB)
McCoy Jetport, Orlando FL (old AFB, many years ago, it's closed)
LaGuardia, New York (dump, should be condemned and burned down)
Dulles International, Northern VA (nice place but always under construction)
Hopkins International, Cleveland OH (nice place but who's going to use it?)
Pittsburgh International, Pittsburgh PA (also very nice place)
Hartsfield International, Atlanta GA (hasn't everybody been here once?)
DFW International, Dallas/Ft. Worth TX (is a city in itself)

>Which airports have you been to, categorized by Departure/Arrival; Layover;
>Pick-up/Dropoff; and Just For Fun?

Well, since I don't know the codes for most of them, I'll just go with the
city/airport name:

Chicago O'Hare (a million times)
Denver (New)
Buffalo-Niagara*
Toronto Pearson
Orlando
Tampa
Phoenix Sky Harbor
New York Laguardia
Newark (didn't fly anywhere, tho)
Springfield Capitol (IL)
Washington Reagan
Hilton Head Island Regional (SC)
Atlanta Hartsfield
Cancun International
I think that's all.

* The fact that Buffalo-Niagara airport and Niagara Airport are 10 miles apart
is VERY confusing. And the fact that ticket sellers, and rental car people,
don't know which one is bigger doesn't help. At one point before the trip, I
had plane tickets to Buffalo-Niagara, and a rental car reservation at Niagara.
The other thing that didn't help was the fact that the name of the airport was
recently changed! B-N used to be called Buffalo Regional, which sounds smaller
that "Niagara International," but, in fact, it is larger.

Cancun has to be my least favorite. Everything was expensive (Ham Sandwich and
Pop: $10), and there are no jetways. For the largest airport between Mecixo
City and Rio, I thought it was pretty shabby.
I thought LaGuardia was my second least favorite Airport. I thought it was
ugly and hard to get around. It took my friend's mom about 45 minutes to leave
the airport. My favorite airport was Phoenix's. It's very southwest themed,
and it's near downtown. I like O'Hare and Reagan National also.

My friend, Norman Smith, has as Pilot in Command landed at or taken
off from every public use airport in California. The last to be put in
his log book was SFO (San Francisco International on 01.11.12).
September 11 and low ceilings made him postpone this until then. I
believe this totals something just around 274. He has, as PIC, been to
about 30 airports outside of California. getting the list of his is
easy. It's called the Jepperson Guide!

Actually, there are two international standards. What you're thinking
of is probably the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO,
http://www.icao.int) standard, which is indeed a 4-letter code.
However, there is also a 3-letter code standard, put out by the
International Air Transport Association (IATA, http://www.iata.org).
There are some similiarities between the two, but also some major
differences (mostly in non-US countries). According to one list, there
are also some airports that have one code, but not the other.

http://www.wajb.freeserve.co.uk/ - Scroll down to "IATA/ICAO Airport &
Airline Codes"....it will give both IATA and ICAO codes for both
airports and airlines, worldwide (although I noticed some omissions on
the US side, plus a couple errors).

Here's my own small list, by ICAO (there will be some
duplicates)....bonus points if you can name the ICAOs:

My favorite airports are the smaller ones, namely PVD and MHT in Rhode
Island and New Hampshire respectively. (MHT is TINY, and involves 2-lane
road travel for a couple of miles from I-293. But it has been recently
renovated and its parking facilities are modern.) PVD is easy in/easy out as
long as more than one security screening team is on duty. I also love the B
& C wings at DCA. The USAir shuttle terminals at BOS and DCA are convenient
and pleasant.

Good slash bad: BWI. Probably since I have been there more than any other
airport, I am well used to it, but as a Southwest frequent flyer I had a
very long commute from gate to baggage claim - I (and my luggage) had to go
to the opposite end of the airport, down by the international area. Still,
SW's terminal B is nice.

Worst airport, by far: Midway, before the renovations. JFK doesn't score any
style points either, and BDL (Hartford) is pretty ugly.

I may have a few here that are new to the NG.
I think these are more or less in the order
that I've been to them...
Yes, I cheated for the airport codes:

Depart/Arrive
LBE - Latrobe, PA
FKL - Franklin, PA
MIA - Miami, FL
OCO - San Jose, Costa Rica
UIO - Quito, Ecuador
IND - Indianapolis, IN
(To make this post on-topic: IND is (for now) at Exit 11 of I-465.
When the new terminal is built, any decade now, there will be a
new interchange built at milepost 69 on I-70.)
DFW - Dallas/Fort Worth, TX
ABY - Albany, GA
JAN - Jackson, MS
MHT - Manchester, NH
BWI - Baltimore, MD

Layover
PIT - Pittsburgh, PA

PHL - Philadelphia, PA
CVG - Cincinnati, OH (Covington, KY)

Pick-up/Drop-off
SBN - South Bend, IN

ORD - Chicago O'Hare

Just for fun
CGX - Chicago Meigs - park nearby, and it's the default
airport on the original Microsoft Flight Simulator (Version 1.0,
which ran on an IBM-XT with 640KB RAM, monochrome graphics,
and no HD!)
BTL - Battle Creek, MI - airshow / hot air balloon show
AID - Anderson, IN - airshow
MQJ - Mount Comfort, IN (Indianapolis) - airshow
GUS - Grissom AFB, Peru, IN - airshow

LaGuardia wins scariest airport for me. The runway I always use there
(=2 departures and 3 landings I believe) is right next to the water and
just BARELY long enough. You wonder whether you'll fall into the ocean
on the side of you or in front of you, and you can't count to 1 between
takeoff and the end of the runway.

I can't even BEGIN to imagine what flying into old Kai Tak Airport in
Hong Kong was like. The main approach involved a *TIGHT* turn in a
narrow corridor that was literally between rows and rows of tall
buildings. The closest approximation would be if the middle of
Manhattan was the area's main airport instead of Central Park.

It was pretty exciting to say the least. Something surreal about
looking out the window and looking UP at apartment blocks when you're
still a couple of hundred feet off the ground.

Chicago O'Hare - those guys know how to run an airport in darn near any
kind of weather. DFW and Hartsfield slow to a crawl if there's any
weather more substantial than a heavy dew...O'Hare cruises along when
it's snowing at two inches an hour.

The new addition at Washington National absolutely ROCKS. One of the
most beautiful airports I have ever been to. And the layout is way
better than it was when the original terminal was the main one.

Great airport, fucked up layout (there is no other word to describe
it). As someone who had to fly Southwest to BWI, I know of the hike
from Terminals B and C to the baggage claim.

My Favorite airports:

Atlanta Hartsfield:

Yes, it can be crowded and overwhelming, but the layout is simple, and
there are some good concessions (hey, Burger King beats out some
crappy Host-Marriott crud anyday). The train rocks.

Pittsburgh International:

Just for the Air mall alone, I love this place.

Dallas/Ft. Worth International:

I used to change planes all the time here. When I was a little kid, I
remember how the airport seemed larger than life, and yes, the place
is a city unto itself.

>
> Worst airport, by far: Midway, before the renovations. JFK doesn't score any
> style points either, and BDL (Hartford) is pretty ugly.

I cannot stand:

LAX:

Ugly, cramped, messed up layout. The Delta Terminal and the United
Terminal and the Northwest Terminal are the only good ones there.

San Diego:

In the middle of the city, and planes landing over Balboa Park disrupt
plays every few minutes. You can even wave at people working in the
skyscrapers in Downtown! The terminals were renovated, and the
addition to Terminal 2 is cool, but oh, how I wish they put the
airport out at Miramar.

Houston Hobby:

Thank GOD they are adding on and renovating this old piece of crap
airport.

Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport:

Bad layout, in the middle of the suburbs (remember the Pan-Am crash of
1982?, and the airport is uuuuuuuuuuuuuuugly!

Or the other way, gazing out the window of your apartment and looking
DOWN on those commercial airliners AND at being able to see the
expressions on the faces of their passengers.

Departure/Arrival
JFK - John F. Kennedy International, Jamaica, NY

CDG - Charles DeGaulle, Roissy, France
BCN - Barcelona, Spain
PAP - Port-au-Prince International (nee Francois Duvalier International),

YMX - Mirabel International, Mirabel, Quebec
I think Mirabel has been nearly abandoned except for a few charter flights.
I've read from a Google Search that most of the buildings have been
abandoned. I'd love to see a "modern" airport that's been abandoned.

BTW, JFK's expansive roadway system makes for great roadgeeking. The amount
of ramps and flyovers have always amazed me. Are there any other airports
that are good for roadgeeking?

Terminal 3 at CVG (Delta and Delta Connection carriers) is great but Terminals 1
and 2 are older and smaller. Terminal 2 really sucks. There are maybe 10 easts
per gate, the concourse is narrow and the windows only come up to waist level.
