"U.S. 421 bridge over South Holston Lake is undergoing renovation"
_Bristol Herald Courier_ - Friday, Nov 30, 2007
Excerpts:

'BRISTOL, Tenn. – Work is under way to renovate the 57-year-old American
Legion Memorial Bridge that crosses U.S. Highway 421 over South Holston
Lake.'

'The $3.9 million project on the Sullivan County landmark began this
week and should be complete by July, said Wayne Feger, Tennessee
Department of Transportation civil engineering manager.'

'"This project is in response to requests that we raise the steel
portals at each end of the bridge to accommodate tall trucks and boats
being hauled on trailers," Feger said. "The existing two-lane deck also
will be removed and resurfaced with concrete. Finally, the entire steel
structure will be repainted."'

'Built in 1950, the through-truss bridge – steel supports above road or
deck – provides access to the lake and Cherokee National Forest from the
southeastern portion of the county.'

'"We also had requests to jack the bridge up higher so that the
clearance was greater between the water and the deck, but we won’t be
doing that," said Travis Brickey, TDOT spokesman. "Also the name of the
bridge will not change. As a matter of practice, if we tore down a
structure and built another right next to it, it would retain its
original name."'

'Beginning sometime next week, timed traffic signals will stop oncoming
cars and trucks from each direction in an alternating fashion to allow
motorists the use of one lane as the work is performed.'

'The length of the bridge’s two-lane deck measures 1,262 feet.'

Very nice...this is the state that said they were getting rid of all
trusses. At least in this case they lied in everybody's favor. This
looks like a very nice bridge, and it would be quite a loss to lose
it. Now if they'd just keep the bridge over Nickajack Lake on US
41/72 and those on U.S. 70 east of Newport, I'd be adequately
satisfied.

The truss on US 25E between Newport and Morristown probably isn't going anywhere
anytime soon either.

Last I checked, the US 70 bridge was actively being replaced, and the US
41/72 bridge is scheduled for replacement. To make matters worse, an old
truss bridge on US 25/70 between Newport and NC over the French Broad River
is also being replaced.

What a creative bridge state I live in! :P
