Cinemax ran the 1971 car-chase classic Vanishing Point a few nights ago, and
I was wondering, what exactly would be the route in 1971 from Denver to S.F.
(the White Challenger's intended destination). Some of the movie has him on
U.S. 6/U.S. 24, and U.S. 50, while the Nevada HP has him on U.S. 40 at one
point. He enters California on CA 167, north of Mono Lake. The time of year
is not mentioned, though I expect that someone in his situation would want
to avoid Yosemite NP and the Tioga Pass route. He likely went up U.S. 395 to
CA 88, then picking up CA 4, as he's shown on the CHP tracking map as going
through the town of Melones on CA 49, before picking up 120 and meeting his
end at the (fictional) town of Cisco. (that scene was shot in Cisco, UT,
btw, according to the Internet Movie Database) Any comments or thoughts?

that's one hell of a round a bout way of getting there.
why not just stay on US50 the entire way?

But then, hollywood is known for making roads where there are none.

Quite. You can tell that scenery isn't the Sierra Nevada Foothills (I live
in the Fresno County portion), and there's a railroad passing through the
town. Personally, though I may be wrong about the car that was wrecked for
the shoot, but that was a waste of a perfectly good Dodge Challenger at the
end.

The map in the CHP office is partially bullshit. You can see Mono Lake, but
the Central Valley looks like a bunch of lines some studio artist just made
up.

It's interesting that none of the locations IMDb mentioned are in
California.

That's her. One of two beauties in the movie. The other beauty is the
Challenger.
