We are referring to a rather short stretch of highway just over the
New York City border. It is maintained by New York State and since about
1972 has not had an official touring route number since NY State touring
route 25C was decommissioned. 25C was an alternate to 25 and followed Union
Turnpike for most of its route. The portion of Union Turnpike in Nassau
County is currently on the books as "secret" reference route 900F, meaning
that it had no posted reassurance shields, and, consistent with state
practice, the dozen or so existing reference route markers ("little green
signs") were never updated to reflect that and continued to bear the "25C"
designation. The posting of reassurance shields on this stretch of road is
either very newsworthy as it would mean that the touring route is being
officially revived, or nothing more than fodder for roadgeeks as it simply
means that some highway workers wasted about $1000 of taxpayers' money
posting unnecessary signs. As much as I would enjoy seeing them, I do have
to draw that conclusion as I can hardly see any great use for them. The road
does not connect to any other touring route on either end; I can only see
the posting of signs as having some connection to validating a GPS that was
erroneously programmed and announced "turn right at NY 25C." Even then, more
than the two reassurance shields would be necessary; some shields with
arrows would be needed at New Hyde Park Road and Lakeville Road and perhaps
a JCT or two at either end.
Finally, as I have said in the past, these short stretches of state
highway should be officially abandoned in state highway law and returned to
local maintenance so that the whole discussion becomes moot. In this case,
one could argue that the road should never have been included in the state
highway system in the first place, unless the plan was to extend the eastern
end to meet another state highway. I believe that even when 25C was a
touring route, the eastern section, over Marcus Blvd, was signed over county
highways. I was only 10 in 1972, so I can barely remember some of this and
have to resort to Internet research and extant physical evidence such as
remaining relics of state traffic signals. (I don't think any of these can
be found on Marcus Avenue.)
