There is a small artist's impression of the new N700 series train on a
Japanese Yahoo news report :
http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20030627-00000184-kyodo-soci

The train represents an evolution of the current 700 series train, and will
be the first shinkansen train to incorporate tilting (up to 1 degree). This
will enable it to run at 270 km/h even on 2,500 m radius curves. Maximum
speed will be 300 km/h (on the Sanyo Shinkansen only)
The prototype is due to be delivered around March 2005 for extensive test
running before full-production trains enter service in autumn 2007.

I don't see any pictures.

How much time does this save? It would be the first train
tilting at this speed.

Can you not see it?

It is expected to cut approximately 5 minutes off the current 2 hr 30 min
journey time between Tokyo and Osaka. Because of curves, there doesn't
appear to be any possibility of increasing the maximum speed beyond 270 km/h
on this route, but this isn't so bad when one considers that the line was
only designed for a maximum of 250 km/h when built in 1964, and trains never
ran above 220 km/h until the early 90s.

I've tried a couple times too and with my limited Japanese I think I know
where it is supposed to be but is only a blank spot.

Strange. The direct link to the image is:
http://jp.a1.yimg.com/7/50/6316/1056712985/img.news.yahoo.co.jp/images/20030627/kyodo/20030627-00000184-kyodo-soci-thum-000.jpg
Or try this if the long URL breaks up: http://tinyurl.com/fsi6
(The image is only a thumbnail, though.)

The same image is also included at the top of the JR West press release
page:

A PDF version includes a larger copy of the same image.

Thank you very much.

I think the "white with two blue stripes" design looks a little
old meanwhile ....

interesting, sort of looks like an E-4 front end...most people have no
idea of the number of trainsets and models of Skinkansen and think only of
the 0 series cars. are any of those even left in service, I thought they
pulled em years ago.??

> Dave Fossett

oh and if I haven't told you, great web site you have, probably the best
web site anywhere on a single rail service, Now if you put in some
photos of the flying junction near Takasaki you would really impress some
folks (or scare em off?)

West Japan Railways were still using 0 series trainsets as of last November.

Yes, there are still a few of the original 0 series sets soldiering on in
the west of Japan. I think they have about two more years before they are
all gone.
They are being refitted with newer seats and repainted in a smart new paint
scheme. These sets are about 25 years old, but they don't look too bad for a
40-year-old design! There is a photo of one like this on the page below.
http://shinkansen.s24.xrea.com/west/0/
I'm hoping to travel west later this summer to stock up on photos of the new
livery for my website.

The original 0 series will be gone in two or three year, for sure. And
200 series, which looks like 0 series in that they have "round nose,"
too, in the Tohoku and Joetsu shinkansen may be gone in a few year,
too. They are replacing with E4 series and E2-1000 series. So the
original "round-nose" style shinkansen will disappear .
Furthermore, the 100 series, whose maximam speed is 220km/h, is going
to disappear in this fall, maybe October. So, in Tokaido Shinkansen
there will be no shinkansen whose maximam speed is less than 270km/h.

Exactly the same shall apply to E4 bi-level Shinkansen sets in 2021.
