Not surprised - the North Island is largely volcanic - and many of the
volcanoes are very much alive. Also there's no such thing as an
extinct volcano - all are merely dormant. At least the Kaimai Tunnel
doesn't take passenger trains.

This is what makes the westward extension of the lines into Britomart
by tunneling through volcano Mount Eden so crazy. Mount Eden is only
dormant at best. And the train service through it will be primarily
for passengers.

Read the newspaper report again:

Quote: "It found five workers became weak and disoriented after
inhaling gas from petrol-driven equipment being operated in the
tunnel, which has no ventilation system."

Petrol-driven means, y'know, the infernal combustion engine.

Nuffink to do with your volcanic expose-ay..

Though mebbe it was just as well I held my breath several times on Mar
12 & 13 while riding MAXX out of Britomart and through the tunnel
under Parnell/Newmarket.

And it's not only Mount Eden that could be a problem: how about 48 of
them?

Hilarious misinformation from CJB.
