That's jumping the gun somewhat. As yet we don't have any real
indication of the cause of the derailment.

Why? To me it looks as though the catch points did exactly the job they
were designed to do.

I wondered about catch points, but couldn't see any in Google Earth,
though there is a rail that looks as if it could have been part at some
time.

When has it NOT been slack! The only maintenance done is to meet minimum
standards so management can force train crews to take trains into service
even when they are otherwise unsafe for passengers.
