So, still shorter than the Ghan.

Don't know for how much longer. GSR plan to double the services into Darwin
during the peak season and thus run shorter trains. Apparently Darwin is
having problems coping with one very large train load of people arriving in
town on Tuesday nights.....

Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin says 6,000 extra passengers are
expected to come to Darwin as a result of the expansion.

"It's good to hear in Darwin that the hotels find that, you know, the night
the Ghan comes in and the other one leaves, that they're full bookings," she
said.

Good to see that use of clear, lucid English is not a pre-requisite for a
Chief Minister!

You have to realise that she used to be a journalist :-)

And you know how they count up there: "One, two, little mob, big mob."

I believe so, from what I have read of the Ghan. Perhaps a Canadian
reader can confirm this, but I am under the impression they do not run
more than 28 cars on the Canadian in the summer. I do not really know
how the terrain compares between the route of the Ghan and the Canadian,
but I suspect the Canadian may have the steeper grades. I wonder how
the on-board services compare? They used to be somewhat better on the
Canadian when it was run by Canadian Pacific; then again, at that time
it only had about 12 cars or so. If it were not such a long flight to
Australia, I would ride the Ghan sometime.

Cheers.

That would have been my next question ;-)

You will see here, in German language,
Ghan Trains with 42 cars which use three platforms
at Adelaide...
