Environmentalists will claim victory for this closure, albeit that the
proposed closure is probably being made by CN for financial reasons.
But isn't this an amazing turn of events?? Less than a year ago both rr's
were discussing a merger of track and operations and utilizing CN's Beachburg
sub. Now it is a candidate for abandonment.
And where does this leave CP?? IMHO I would expect them to follow suit within a
period of time and abandon their trackage from Smith Falls to Mattawa, routing
all their traffic thru Toronto as well. Transcontinental freight traffic
along this route is probably no more than 3 trains each way in a 24 hour
period. Westerly trains would be 471, 481, and 491 which is combined 471/481
on weekends; and easterly would be 474,476,482 and 484. And I rather doubt
all these trains run every day.
Running them all via Toronto would add more time to the cross Canada trip,
but the cost of maintaining the infrastructure of 2 subdivisions would be
greater in the long run.

It may not work as well for CPRS as it does for CN to route all their
Montreal traffic via Toronto. There is also the problem of capacity in
the Toronto terminal to take into account here. Remember also that the
Belleville sub is single track, unlike CN's Kingston sub. While
east-end traffic isn't too heavy right at the moment, North-end is. So
you have the added hassles of getting something moving through the
terminal (a nightmare most days - take it from a guy who sat for SEVEN
HOURS at a light at McCowan on 935 one day!), then up the Mactier.

With the way crewing goes in Toronto, you could likely see a train
being held for hours at Toronto Yard (usually holding the main line,
not yarded) adding to the delays. I'm not saying they won't do it, but
I honestly believe service would suffer if they did.

Just my opinion...

I'd bet M-track went apoplectic after the North Toronto sub incident
May 18th. BTW, the four crewmembers working that train (the 3rd Emery)
were all dismissed from service. If it had been anywhere else but
through Rosedale........?????

Natch! They went on and on about the dangers of the vapours in the
empty tank cars that did not come off the rails.
