In Vancouver BC an old CPR roundhouse has been restored and is being
used to house a recreation center.
It is also housing an old CPR steamer...which will eventually be moves
to a display position under shelter outside.
Turntable still exists andd still is functional (i think).

Another that slipped my mind is the Verde Tunnel and Smelter Railroad in
Clarkdale Arizona. After the VT&S quit running in the 40's it was used
forvarious purposes unti the Arizona Central bought the Sante fe line from
Drake to Clarkdale. The AZ Central used until last year. It belongs to a
company that owns the site of the smelter. There didn't seem to be any
activity last Memorial Day weekend when I visited.

The old ElPaso and Aouthwestern Roundhouse in Tuscon is still in use. I
think its a oil distributor. No track connection now.

I believe the former GN roundhouse in Seattle is still being used for
BN loco shops.
Its big.
Steamtown National Historic Site, Scranton, PA, is using 13 stalls of
the DL&W roundhouse to house working steam locomotives, an additional
two stalls for display, and has constructed new sections replacing ones
torn down by Conrail for a Visitor Center, Theater, and two museums. The
turntable is in daily operation.
See http://www.cs.uofs.edu/steamtown/homepage.html for details and
photos.

In New Mexico the BNSF still uses its Albuquerque turntable although the
roundhouse is gone. The former ATSF roundhouse still stands in Las Vegas;
a few years ago a lumber company was using it for storage.
In Chama on the Cumbres & Toltec, the new owners of a Denver amusement
park have donated a former C&S turntable which was trucked to the yard.
The C&TS plans to install the turntable and build a new roundhouse (!) on
the site of the long-gone D&RGW facility.

In Columbus, the CSX Parsons Yard (ex C&O nee HV) still has a
roundhouse and working turntable. The roundhouse is now used to store
shop equipment. There have been rumors for years that they were going
to demolish it, but nothing has ever been confirmed.
Also in Crestline, Ohio, a huge PRR roundhouse still stands on the
west side of the old CR yard near the Triple Crown roadrailer
facility. All of the windows have been broken out, and supposedly
someone owns it and that you should not venture inside of it.
Tony
Bill,
I read about the Cumbres & Toltec getting a roundtable in TRAINS magazine,
I believe.
I think that is a VERY nice thing to do, since it gives C&T even more
"authenticity" in terms of what the D&RGW were doing up until the 1960's in
terms of narrow-gauge railroading the Rockies.

Four come to my mind:
- Delaware, Lackawanna & Western's roundhouse on the
southside of their former (now CP) yard east of
Binghamton, NY. The property and buildings (there
are several in addition to the roundhouse) are
not the property of CP, and are abandoned. No
turntable in the pit.
- Lehigh Valley's roundhouse in Manchester, NY. It
is owned by a local company and used for storage.
I can't remember if the turntable is there.
(NOTE: The Manchester Agway uses several Lehigh
Valley boxcars for storage. All are still in
LV paint and markings.)
- New York Central roundhouse at the west end of
Frontier Yard in Buffalo. Its located behind
a Tops grocery store on the north side of
Broadway. Its apparently used by a local company
for storage.
- Bessemer & Lake Erie's roundhouse & turntable at
their main shops in Greeville, PA. B&LE doesn't
appear to store engines in the roundhouse anymore
and I'm not sure if they use the turntable.

Here are some that haven't been mentioned yet:
Colorado Springs, CO. The Victor & Cripple Creek roundhouse at the

Williamson, WV. The N&W roundhouse and turntable are both still in

still in service; roundhouse is gone, replaced by the new loco light

Roanoke, VA. N&W east end shops (Roanoke Shops): turntable is still
in service; don't think there was ever a roundhouse per se. The

Aurora, IL. CB&Q turntable and roundhouse: Still there, still opera-

Several years ago I used to live in Greensboro, NC. THe
old round house and turntable were located just west of
the Pomona Yard. But it is now privatly owned and the
pit has been filled in. The whole thing is used as junk
yard and is impossible to tell what it once was unless
you just happened to know.

The Mt. Claire roundhouse was not built as a locomotive roundhouse - it
was a carhouse. That's the reason for the decked-over turntable and the
fully-enclosed, 360-degree building. Just thought I'd mention that. :o)
There are (or were last time I rode Amtrak through there a couple years
back) two roundhouses still visible in Wilmington, DE. One is at the
Amtrak shops, very decrepid. The other is downtown, near the depot. It
has no tracks running to it and appears to have been converted into a
warehouse. You can see both from the train, but you have to look cloely
to find the one downtown - it's tough to pick it out.
I believe a group on Savannah, GA has restored a roundhouse as a museum.
Likewise in Hagerstown, MD.
The Conway Scenic Railroad has a turntable with a small, two (or maybe
three) stall roundhouse in Conway, NH.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has an old Reading turntable that
they transplanted to their museum site.
Tennesee Valley Railroad in Chattanooga also has a turntable.
East Broad Top has an eight-stall roundhouse and turntable at Orbisonia.
Someone mentioned Steamtown - I was under the impression that they built
all 4 sections of that roundhouse complex from scratch, on the
foundation of a demolished structure. Am I wrong about that? I haven't
seen that since it was finished, I was last up there in 1992. Speaking
of Steamtown, is the old roundhouse and turntable from Riverside still
there at Steamtown's old site? Or is that the table they moved?
Many of these places are on the Web, I have links to most of them on the
SCRM site's Links pages. See the URL below.
I'd be interested in seeing a compiled list of remaining turntables and
roundhouses posted to this group.

EX-GN/BN Jackson St. Roundhouse.
Originally owned by GN and turned over to the US Postal service.
Turntable was pulled out and pit filled. The front of the roundhouse
(Engine stall door area) was added onto for more room covering most
of the turntable area.
The site has been turned over to the Minnesota transportation museum
and the building is in the process of being restored. Plans call for the
turntable pit to be dug out and a turntable has been purchased from
the BN (turntable came from the Minneapolis Junction facility).
Walked through a section of the old roundhouse and it still had the

I have no conformation, but I would suspect the KCS still has a
turntable in Pittsburg, KS.
In Dover, NH just off Broadway, there is a roundhouse that's now a
pottery studio/heavy equipment rental company (how's that for strange
bedfellows?). The turntable in front of it was removed and the pit
filled in. The yard is still in use by Guilford Rail/Springfield

actually operated the turntable as a kid.

In Cleveland the old B&O roundhouse still stands, with a working
turntable, as well as a steam locomotive inside, as well as some
passenger cars. I am not sure about Greenville Pa. They used to have
a nice roundhouse on the B&LE railroad with some steam, as well as
passenger equipment in it.
The ex-IC facilities now P&L (Paducah and Louisville) in Louisville, KY.
still have the old turntable. The ex-K&I T roundhouse and turntable are
still in tact, this is now NS on the west side of Louisville. The ex-L&N
roundhouse and turntable are still in use in Paris, KY., now TTI.

UP Ft. Worth (ex-MP) (That makes 2 in "Cow Town.")
BNSF Silsbee (ex-ATSF)
Possibility: HB&T Houston (Milby St.) (Can anyone confirm/deny?)
AFAIK, the ex-SP/T&NO roundhouse in Lufkin (on the Rabbit Line between
Houston and Shreveport) is still standing, decrepit and used only for
m/w parking (no doors, windows, etc). The tt is long gone.

The HRM is actively pursuing the aquisition of the property; currently
the agreement is a caretaker's lease, which allows staff to arrest
vandals,
occasionally do light weed and structure preventive maintenance, but
does NOT allow full scale restoration.
Yes, it looks like it will fall down, and unfortunately some of it
already
has (political delay of the process?), but the key structures which
include
a 25 bay roundhouse are pretty well intact. Once permanent acquisition
occurs, the HRM will be able to do real restoration.
There are a 105' (if memory serves) turntable, a drop table, overhead
cranes in
the roundhouse and erecting shop and a transfer table in the complex.
None are operable; the entire complex has been scavenged of ALL copper -
no power is available anywhere permanently.
With support, we are looking towards the goal of a Spencer or Steamtown
setting - probably more Spencer, as we'd like to have the heavy
equipment
available for big steam restoration - one of the Reading T-1's was
restored
15 years ago. We have our own diesels and coaches to maintain, too.
It is very unsafe to venture into the complex alone or unguided. If you
make arrangements with the HRM staff, we are willing to take an
occasional
visitor back to the heart of the complex in a safe manner.
The HRM is beginning a website - photos aren't up yet, but are coming.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the Wisconsin Central still
