Do you mean Molten Sulfur? If so it's a way of transporting and handling
sulfur. If it's really molten sulfur it's got to be kept above 113 C
(237 F) to keep from freezing back to a solid....

Sulfur is used for whole bunches of things- making explosives, plastics,
paints, insecticieds, medicines, drying fruit, gardening, etching and on
and on.

Are these cars fitted with steam line, just in case they cool off just a bit too much in transit?

I see them on the Lehigh Line also, they are just a regular tank car (no
steam line) and they have molten sulfur written on them, as that is all
they carry. They are cool to the touch, and I guess they are very well
insulated ( I wish I could insulate my house like that :-)) Some of them
have an orange banf arond the center of the car, but I have seen this on
other cars.

Molten Sulfur is loaded as a liquid and depending upon time and weather
conditions can solidify in transit. Most if not all unloading of Molten
Sulfur is done after the car is heated through the use of the tank cars
heater coils.

Most (the vast majority, I believe) is used to make sulfuric acid, used
for a zillion industrial applications. Sulfuric acid is manufactured more
than any other chemical. 70+% is used to make fertilizer.

Yes. I am not even sure if they are insulated.
