They're rebuilding the track between Ayer and South Acton. So
Boston-South Acton and Ayer-Fitchburg are run as isolated segments with
a bus in between. I think this started in mid-September and will last
several more weeks. I guess the track is still passable at times,
because I saw what was apparently one of the Ayer-Fitchburg shuttles go
through Lincoln the other day. It was two MBTA coaches pulled (or
pushed) by a road switcher in Amtrak (not MBTA) colors.
I wish the work would include re-installing the second track west of
South Acton, but AFAIK it doesn't.
