Mostly though we have Chief, Second, Third, Fourth and Electrician. The place
of the juniors is taken by 'fitters'

The 'Juniors' were the 5th, 6th, and sometimes 7th Engineers.
Sometimes the ship would have a Second Electrician, he would be
classed as a junior. Juniors were the 'Junior Engineers'. Sparks were
the Radio Officers. We didn't have them on the Pax ship, as the ship
was fully GMDSS.
The Electricians were known as 'Leckys'
for electricians, singapore and malaysia calls them 'sparks' and there
yeah i was wrong......indeed the radio officers are called 'sparkies'
and the electrician the 'lacky'. i remembered one friend of mine who
called a 'lacky' and got the reply that 'i am not a lacky but a radio
officer'!!
anyway, this is the first time that i know there are even 6th and 7th
engineering in the engineering department.

In the 'Good Old Days' before UMS, there used to be two Engineer
Officers on each watch.
We had 2nd and 5th on the 4-8, 3rd and 6th on the 12-4, andth and
2/elect on the 8-12.
Some ships had even more....
good old days?? i beg to differ. i used to be on a ship without ums
and it was hell for me. as the most junior engineer onboard, i was
always given the 0200-0600 watch. thats the worst watch hour to be
given.
cheers!

Good ole days. Back in the 70's we ran the Sealand SL-7's with three
people on a watch. Two licensed engineers and a junior engineer. The SL-
7's had two 60,000 HP steam turbines with one boiler for each engine.
Speed 33kts. BTW - If I have to stand a watch I prefer the 12-4 since
there is absolutely no one down there fooling with anything between
midnight and 4AM and from Noon to 1PM.

Yeah you're right. I used to love the 12-4 when I was Second Mate.
Everyone else was asleep, and I could get on with the job without any
interfering Senior Officers about. Of course, now that I'M a senior
officer it's different..... :-)

British and Commonwealth ships usually had larger crew than
Scandinavian ones. A typical Scandinavian cargoliner or tanker from
this period would have had Ch.Eng., 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th (maybe), 4-6
oilers/motormen (3 of which were watchkeepers), 1-2 apprentices,
1 fitter, 1 lekkie.
I am at present serving as Chief on a 50.000 tons car carrier. The
engine crew, beside myself, consists of 3 engineers, 2 motormen, 1
fitter, 1 lekkie, 1 apprentice. Being UMS, this is regarded as being
on the excessive side................
