Various Weights of Ships etc

Could someone indicate the differences in the IMO,Gross Tonnage,Summer DWT
of vessels.

It surmised that one is the limit of cargo weight and therefore what would a
tanker be able to carry in gallons of crude oil/petrol..

IMO is not a tonnage or volume.

Summer deadweight is the difference in weight (in tonnes) between a vessel's
light displacement and maximum displacement (eg when loaded to to her marks,
in this case her summer marks). Thus deadweight is the vessel's carrying
capacity and can be regarded as an indicator of the vessel's cargo capacity
in tonnes (minus the weights of fuel, ballast etc etc).

Gross tonnage is a misnomer, it is simply a value of underdeck volumetric
capacity; in the 'old' days, 1 gross tonnne was the equivalent of 100 cubic
feet.

I tonne is the equivalent of 1000 litres of fresh water, or 1025 litres of
seawater, or around 1162 litres of gas oil, or around 1285 litres of
petroleum spirit.

There are 4.546 litres in a proper gallon.

Thanks, Allatsea,my late husband was an Australian tanker ships master and I
didnt enquire too much about his ships coming and going.
However, now I have an interest ,as our house overlooks
Kurnell(Caltex) refinery in Botany Bay.I can enjoy them,like he did.
