In UK most shipping companies employ through manning agencies these days.
Try:
Sea Staff International - http://www.deltamarine.co.uk
Crewforce - http://www.marine-recruitment.co.uk
If you can get hold of officers union paper -NUMAST Telegraph - lots of
manning agencies and shipping CO. adverts every month.

This is what I posted some weeks ago --- I have the feeling that
shipping companies are getting somewhat arrogant in their attitude
towards prospective employees.
"Some years ago I found it necessary to leave a sea going
career to take up shore based employment. The time has now come when I
may return to sea but in order to do so I need to revalidate my First
Mates F.G. (Class 2) Certificate.
I have made the necessary enquiries with the appropriate
agencies and although sailing as a supernumerary officer is an option,
I intend to take the shore based refresher course.
However, prior to doing this, and possibly during the course I
would like to gain as much practical experience as possible. With this
in mind I have written to several British shipping companies asking if
it would be possible for me to sail on board one of their vessels,
for the occasional voyage. This would be in a supernumerary capacity
and would of course be without payment, with the necessary indemnities
being signed. My intentions being to look, listen and learn, and to
examine and appraise myself of new technology so as I may compare the
theory with the practice.
I have written to 15 different companies and in return have
received the following.
One replied to say they use a crewing agency (fair enough)
One said they have no vacancies but they would put my name on file ??
(RTFL springs to mind here!)
Three said thank you but no,
Two said yes !
Eight did not bother to reply.
People often comment about various sections of British
Industry going downhill. Perhaps if someof them used some old
fashioned courtesy and replied to letters it would help.
It's a good job I was not an agent from another company
checking out the opposition.
In respect of the two companies that said yes, I have
completed one voyage (at my expense) and have another in thepipeline
when I can afford to do it.

ps .. have tried a few more since then and the replies are stunning by
their absence !
