The first C-Series aircraft was unveiled in Mirabel Québec (north of
Montréal) on Thursday March 7th.

It is still unpainted. But engines attached. (P&W Geared Turbo Fan)

First flight is expected before end of june 2013. (6 months late)

One novelty: the middle seat (the undesirable one :-) will be wider than
the window and aisle seats in the coach 3+3 config.

Also interesting: the unveiled aircraft is still unfinished. Unpainted,
a few panels missing. And they are still doing integration and systems
testing work/debugging.

This is in contrast with the much more "impressive" 787 unveiling in
2007 with a plane that looked great but was an unfinished shell that
would need to be disassembled a few times to fit the missing parts and
change rivets etc.

Question:

In that image, can anyone explain the role of the rod ahead of the nose ?

is the C-Series to Bombardier what the 380 was to Airbus (venturing into
an aircraft size that company had never built), or is building a 100-160
seat aircraft easier for a a company such as Bombardier because of
existing "inspiration" from the 737 and 320 ?

Also, Bombardier has announced an option for 160 seats on the CS-300,
with the addition of extra overwiong exits (this can either be done at
aircraft construction, or retrofitted into existing aircraft Bombardier
said).

At this stage, could one deduct that upgrading the cargo/pax capacity of
the airraft is an indication that it is better than expected in the
weight and/or engine performance aspects ?

Short videos of the unveiling from Globe and Mail newspaper:

BTW, the aircraft has only 148 firm orders as of december 2012. I
believe analysts expect 300 before they start to take Bombardier
seriously (its stock has languished for a few years because of this
project).

Airspeed / AOA sensor in undisturbed airflow ?

IMU on the 787 this was done with a trailing probe
( long line with probe trailed from top of horizontal stabiliser )

It is a pitot tube. Test aircraft often have oversized and extra
long pitot tubes to get good data from undistrubed air. This data
is then used to refine the position and shape of the lower profile
pitot tubes used on the production aircraft.
