Does anyone have any lowdown on exactly what this means ?
Is this yet another attempt at glorified code sharing on USA-UK flights
only ? If so, why do these 2 airlines insist on using the word "merger"
which they know will attract far greater scrutiny ?
Or would this be the real McCoy, with a bona fide merger of the two
corporations into a single trans-national airline with two national
identities, a bit like AF and KLM ?

British-American Airlines...
I think your possibility is more likely.

This is rather unlikely, for the same reasons that VRD couldn't
be the way it was planned (majority ownership of the company overseas).
At least, that is what Branson is fighting for, alongside
potentially launching an anti-trust suit on this, as this would shut
out other competitors on their routes.
An even bigger twist in this is that Iberia is merging with
BAW, so flights from the US, Canada, and Mexico to the UK, EU,
Switzerland, and Norway are involved. That seems to be Branson's
rationale for being up in arms..

BA, AA, IB, Finnair and Royal Jordanian included in anti-trust immunity
request to the USA and Euro authorities. (but the focus seems to be on
BA-IB and AA).
Canada, USA, Mexico, Europe, Switzerland and Norway are the territories
covered by this deal.
Airlines are not merging, they will remain separate legal entities.
So, AA will end up selling seats on BA's A380s... Shock, Horror, AA will
have to include A380 seat layouts in its schedules/website :-) :-)
The alliance makes the A380 useful. BA can put a 380 on LHR-JFK, freeing
one AA aircraft which AA could deploy from another city to LHR.

Goes along with what I was going to post, but opted to post
what I did!
It's akin to the Jetblue/Aer Lingus and Jetblue/Lufthansa deals
where both European carriers can book flights on JBU, and pass them
through at JFK. Just on a grander scale..
