Many interested parties, inclusing Macquary (australia) and Fraport
(germany) were mentioned.
Not long ago, there was a recommendation to breakup BAA, but this
process would have taken a year before the government would have forced
the breakup. I guess BAA now took this as a pre-emptive. Perhaps they
can get to keep Stanstead if they defuse the situation by letting go of
Gatwick before the governmnent would have ordered them to get rid of
both Gatwick and Stanstead.

I think it's simply a "good excuse" to sell. BAA's current owners
borrowed heavily to buy the company, and have been reported as badly
needing to reduce their liabilities.
Virgin Atlantic also mentioned as a possible buyer.

Yep in a later broadcast, BBC interviewd the big cheese at Virgin. He
said that like NATS, it would work well if a group of airlines got
together to buy and operate the airport. Virgin would be interested in
doing that.
