If you are a sole proprietor, you pretty much follow federal guidelines
and prepare your California return based on that information. I believe
the form is 540. You can access information about the state laws at
the following URL:
http://www.ftb.ca.gov/geninfo/index.asp
As far as local & state issues are concerned, go to your local government
offices to see what license and zoning requirements there are. If you must
collect sales tax on your sales or services, you will want to apply to the
state for a license to collect those taxes.
You can go to http://www.irs.gov to pick up government publications
for small business and tax forms that are appropriate to your
sole-proprietorship,
if that is what it is. Start with Schedule C (Form 1040) to get a taste of how
you
are expected to report your income and expense. Generally, California follows
the
same guidelines.
Good Luck!=:)
