State Employer ID on W2 shows 0000000 - can I file Federal return?

The W2 I received from my employer shows the Federal
Employer ID number just fine. But the State Employer ID is a
bunch of zeroes. Does this affect my ability to file my
Federal return?

I have made an inquiry to my State Tax office whether I need
a new W2 or I can enter the number on the tax return that
showed on last years W2.

Assuming they say I need a new W2, does that affect the
answer about the Federal Return?

Thanks
Raymond

If you look at the "employee copy", "state copy", "state 2
copy" and "federal copy" of your W2 you might see something
different on each one. The copy you are supposed to send
with your state return may be the only one with a number on
it.

You also won't have a number on it if you're in a state with
no income tax, or if the income was earned in a state with
no income tax

You should not need a new W2. It will not effect the
federal return. If the state has questions, they will most
likely contact the employer and not you.

If you're using a tax prep program and doing the state it
will need that number but unless there has been a change in
the name or location of the employer, last year's number
would do. It won't change unless there are changes going on
at the employer. If that is the case, they possibly have
not got a new number as yet. Even when we have e-filed, I
have not had any returns rejected on the federal level for
missing state ID numbers.

File your returns-this situation should not matter to anyone.

Don't worry about it. If there's a federal EIN the state ID
number is superfluous. You can file both federal and state
returns with the W-2 you have.
