I have done this several times recently both before the due date and
a year or two after. I handled these the same way.
I amend the primary taxpayer's return, reason: Amending fom MFS to MFJ.
1st column is original primary taxapyer's figures and last column is
MFJ amounts. Fortunately the software allows me to snapshot the
primary TP return and the add the secondary TP information, and out
pops a 1040X.
I have not yet had a case where I thought a 1040 informational copy
was needed. Attach only changed forms and schedules but not the 1040
itself.
I let IRS bear the burden of amending the secondary TPs return.
Never had any objections.
