Does anyone know where I could get some old Mel Tappan Personal Survival
Newsletters or Karl Hess Survival Tommorow newletters? I am also interested in
anything by Rick Fines on survival vehicles.
Thanks
Robert

Rick Fines wrote an article on "Survival Vehicles" in the "Survival
Resource Book". Said book was published (my copy) in 1980 by Paladin
Press.

If you like, I can xerox the article and send it to you.

Dave, could you post it here, I'm sure several of us might be interested.

Indeed we would. DO NOT, BTW write Mrs. Tappan, regardless of how
many lines you devote to admiration for her husband. She doesn't
want any correspondence from survival-oriented folks. Ever again.

At one time, Bill Pier's Survival, Inc. (SI) sold authorized reprints of
the five years of P.S. Newsletter (1977-1982, issues 1-through-36). The
newsletter was edited by Mel and Nancy (Mack) Tappan. It was an
OUTSTANDING publication, IMO.

I got my binder set of P.S. Newsletter from SI. But that was 10 years ago...
Unless I'm mistaken, SI later became (or was bought out by) Major Surplus
and Survival. They may still sell the newsletter reprints:

Major Surplus & Survival
435 W. Alondra Blvd.
Gardena, Calif. 90248
(310) 324-8855 or (800) 441-8855

As I recall from a conversation that I had with Nancy Tappan, the rights
for P.S. Newsletter ended up in the hands of Karl Krupp. Karl
transmorgified it into "Survival Tomorrow" newsletter. He may also have
back issues of Survival Tomorrow and/or P.S. Newsletter available. My
P.O.C. # for him (likely out of date, since it is five years old), is
(503) 479-6699.

I have no idea where you could find Rick Fines, or his writings. There is
always The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature. I suppose that it all
must be on CD-ROM by now... As I rwecall, he did soem writing for some of
the gun magazines. BTW, Rick wrote under the pen name Ross Lee in his
early days when he was still working for one of the big Detroit
manufacturers.

Robert,

The article I found doesn't have a reference to a Mercedes UNIMOG.
It basically trashes the Subaru line, and touts the Jeep CJ7. It talks
about the importance of "zero timing" a vehicle.

IIRC, the article you are looking for was published in an early SURVIVE
magazine, maybe an early SOF; I vaguely remember reading it. I'll look
around and see what I can find. Rick Fines wrote a number of articles
for both SURVIVE and SOF in the early 1980's. You might try a used
bookstore, one that buys old magazine collections.

If you want a copy of this other article, let me know.

For the rest of you: I'm chary of putting it in the ng, because of
copyright laws. If I'm wrong about worrying about this, let me know why.

Carl Krupp changed the title from "Survival Tomorrow" to
"Self-Reliant Living" a few years ago.

The newsletter is still published on an irregular basis
(he once went 18 months between issues). I'm a subscriber.
He did have back issues available a few months ago - I bought
an assortment (many had the old "Survival Tomorrow" title).
I've never asked about the old PSL, though.

From the latest issue, his phone/fax number is:
He seems to prefer being contacted by fax, though.
