You folks seem to be experienced at all sorts of things, so I figured
that you might be able to give me some advice. For the second time,
one of the top layers of my internet security locked up my machine and
I had to power off/on reset. I get up to about 30 different attacks
per hour. Is that excessive ? Is it a signal to stop using
LCC...@aol.com except for email ?

On another topic, do you whistle while you work ? Does it annoy others
around you, or does it encourage them to whistle too ? Does anyone
claim to hear you whistling even when you are not doing it at the
moment ?

I use ZoneAlarm Pro and never have had a security problem. The really nice
thing about it is that it asks your permission of any program seeking to be
used as a server, which eliminates any trojan activity.

Sounds like what I saw with ZoneAlarm while I was using one ISP.

Either change ZA to log but not notify or change ISP's.

I doubt if your e-mail addy has anything to do with it.

Thank you three for replying. I use Zonealarm Pro amoung others. At
one point I had four layers but cut back to three due to performance
bottlenecks. I do not trust any single or even double layer defense. I
also recommend multiple virus scan firewalls behind the internet
security. I have nothing of value on my machine, but security software
is cheap compared to rebuilding favorite places lists and files
gleaned from the net.

Another thing which I see fairly often is unsolicited objects being
added, typically with all digit identifiers. I simply delete them. I
also get a ridiculous number (>500) cookies attached during some
sessions. I recommend purging all cookies as soon as you exit a
session online.

I also at POR often get fatal errors from internet explorer attempting
to perform illegal operations at boot up. With nearly 50,000 files on
my machine, tracking down the villians is too much trouble because the
virus scan software comes up clean. I simply add the security layers
manually and proceed with whatever I wanted to do. A typical day is a
half dozen boots and a couple of POR.

The machine which I use is Windows 98 and has been accumulating junk
for over four years. I think that at Christmas I will be buying an
Apple or other off brand computer and telling Microsoft to kiss off. I
am tired of their interlocked interdependent tangled web of trashy
software products.

No more jokes Today.
