Farmers are a bit like royalty. Farms are usually passed on from father to son or son-in-law. It's unlikely someone from a city or town will ever be one. Money is one factor.
They're in a bit of an odd situation. They might see each other at social events, belong to the same church, serve on the same local volunteer fire department etc. Their kids probably go to the same school and might be dating.
And yet, the farmer across the fence is a competitor.
