Probably the intestines. I wouldn't eat shit either.
Our one cat used to always leave this plus a disposal attachment. The
tail.

My cats have usually left this organ behind, too, and I've always just assumed
it was the stomach. Has the larger tube on one end, smaller, darker and
smaller thing on the other end, looks to be full of some kind of really
unappetizing contents (so I've never persued further investigation .....).

Beats me. Hard to tell without size reference, etc. Might be the "gall bladder"
or something else that's probably sour/bitter.

Ummm... Without the rest of the rodent for context, and nothing to
really judge size from, I'll try "What is the gall bladder?"

Without seeing the jpg, I imagine it's probably the gall bladder. Very
nasty tasty, according to my cats, who used to leave the gall baldders of
many different animals on my kitchen floor. Interest exercise in
comparative anatomy. :-)

I recall reading a LONG time ago that big cats get their vitamins by eating
the guts first.
I also recall a story about cat food where it stated the BEST cat food would
be formed by dropping entire mice into a blender (hair, tail, guts, toe
nails) and serving the result.

I know what a field mouse looks like. They have long tails. This has a
very
short tail.

Sounds like the right description for voles. How big? Medium-large-mouse
sized? Or itty bitty? Larger would make it almost certain they're voles.
while itty-bitty would probably be shrews (And fergawdsake don't mess
with one of those if it's still kicking! You wouldn't BELIEVE what kinda
damage such a small package can inflict, and some of them are actually
mildly venomous!)

What you described is a Short Tailed Shrew.

Glad I could be of service; I hope you're feeling better now. Somewhere
I may still have a .jpg of a horked up hairball containing a nice blend
of wet kibble and chewed up mouse. I can try to find it for you if you
need me to.

Dunno. I'll have to check that out next time.
