I have one of these tools that came with a box of stuff I bought at an
auction. It looks like this photo:
http://farmsteadproductscompany.com/image/cache/Chain%20Breaker-500x500.jpg

It says right on it, that it's a "Steel Chain Detacher".
(The picture says "breaker").

How do you use this tool?
I run a farm, but have never had a need for this. I cant figure out how
they work or what kind of chain they are used for.

The only chains I have are log chains and tire chains for my tractor. I
was hoping it would work to widen chain links that sometimes get bent
together on my log chains, but most are too thick to fit in the groove.

I have used it for bending hooks on mild steel, and it works well for
that, even if that's not the purpose of it.

I googled it, found this picture and several for sale on ebay, but no
one says what they are really used for......

Thanks

Think flat chain. My first thought was feeder house chain on a
combine. A bit here: > http://tinyurl.com/c9rmy6y

That would be to remove a rivet from a chainsaw or bicycle chain. Google
"chain breaker" or "pocket chain breaker".

The chain rivet is placed in the proper size opening (different size
chains/rivets), then a pin is pressed or hammered to knock the rivet out
into that opening.

Here is chain breaker instructions. Notice there is a part for the
bottom which has different sized openings on which you place the
chain...

Thank you, that was most helpful. I actually have this flat chain on my
old JD manure spreader, and I've seen it on other things at machinery
sales. I've never had to work on the chain on my spreader, but if I do,
I now have the right tool.

That pdf file posted by Bill is a good article, but for a totally
different tool.

Thx again.

That brought back some memories. We had a couple elevators to
put ear corn in the old crib and the corn piles. The crib was wooden
with a driveway in the middle. The corn piles were on 1 by 12s with
cribbing in a circle to hold the corn. I remember the neighbors coming
over to help shell the corn.
We used the smaller elevator to put the small square bales in the
barn. It would just fit in the hay mow door with enough room for the
bale to pass through.
