I have a real problem with raccoons around this farm.
I have tried shooting them, but I'm not the best shot for starters and
they move fast. Plus I cant carry a rifle with me 24/7.

I cant use poison because I have outdoor cats.
Someone told me to just put some coke in a bowl and the coons will
drink it, and it will kill them. I really doubt this, but I'm
asking.....

I asked the guy if it would kill cats too, and he said no, because
cats can burp and coons cant.

This all sounds pretty goofy to me. After all, coke is a food, so how
can it kill coons?

Anyone know about this?

a quick look around the internet came up with:

"make sure it has lots of carbonation. Coons can't burp, and so it will
kill them by exploding their stomach".

several items about mixing in poison (golden maldrin fly bait,,maybe a
cupful) (Methomyl and Coca Cola works great).

Let us know what you do and the result.

That's just mean. Why not just pen up your chickens and other poultry or
get a guard dog to run off the varmints? My best guess is that you've
never actually seen how smart those critters are. The Indians/native
Americans called them "little Men" because it was difficult to outsmart
them when they found a meal in the offing. They are about as smart as
Chimpanzees in terms of IQ..

In most states it is illegal to poison wildlife. You are able to live
trap and shoot nuisance animals, but you probably should check with the
Department of conservation/ Department of natural Resources or your
equivalent state officials as to local rules and regulations before you
do anything to any wildlife. If you don't you may find yourself in some
serious legal trouble.

Get a live trap and catch them that way.
Put your cats inside for a few days and bait the trap with some canned
cat food.

Or get a shotgun.

Poisoning any animal is just not right.

by taking certain preventive measures I do not have to contend
with cockroaches or ants in my house therefore I'm not provoked
or disposed with an inclination to do harm to those creatures.

most often problems with wildlife on farms are the result of
poor practices by the human. not securing possible food sources
and not taking the time to insure there are no unnecessary
attractions will always result in having problems with wildlife.
then the lazy irresponsible human seeks to solve the problem they
themselves created by killing the wildlife.

We don't count the insects that vastly outnumber us.. Nor some species
of fish. For the most part we as a species rely far too much on poisons
to control insects breeding ever increasing throngs of pesticide
resistant bugs. Perhaps the best bet is not to poison anything, but then
we wouldn't be able to grow as much cheap food if we relied entirely on
nature to keep the bugs at bay. The insects would win unless we started
to view them as a food source like they do in some third world countries.

Often, the "Animal Warden" (aka dog catcher) will loan out traps to catch
something or another. Where I lived, you could get a trap to catch ferral
house cats.

If you caught a cat, you can just let it go or bring it (still in the trap)
to the "shelter" and take the trap back home to try again. If you catch a
"critter," you can either release it yourself or call the animal warden and
he or his deputy will KILL the critter in the trap and take the dead body.
He leaves the trap.

The rules may differ where you live but ...

The thing is that if you buy your own trap you have to worry (if you get
caught with it) about whether to have obeyed all the rules, etc. If you
use a government provided trap ....

Yep, mean.
Why not just kill them outright by shooting them rather then have them
die a slow lingering death.

Well, I don't know about cayotes but Possums and Coons tend to be suckers
for most "humane" animal traps.

They are more expensive but the traps that are open at both ends (and, the
tripped, close both ends) are more likely to capture an animal that has some
experience.

Even "humane" traps have to be tended because that critter wants OUT and he
will work at getting OUT until he is released or he is dead.

The city folks in and around Omaha seem to think the humane thing to do is to trap the coon in their backyard and release them in the country which is my back yard. Trust me you are not being humane. I trap them in a large live trap then use a 9mm hollow point to dispatch them. Save yourself the trouble of trapping cats and dogs instead of coons. I have used a live trap baited with a single marshmallow for years. Cats don't seem to like them and the live trap is where the dogs can't get at it. I usually manage to trap a coon a night during spring and early summer. Upwards of 30 a year.

Functional enough, but when it comes to a live-trap with a coon in it,
I've always preferred to just drop the whole thing into a horse trough
with a suitable weight on top for a few minutes. Cheaper than a bullet,
and zero chance of either missing or shooting through the beast and
damaging the trap.

(Never mind how amazingly vicious most of the coons I've had to deal
with over the years have been - I can only remember one that would have
been calm enough to get an absolutely certain shot into it - All the
rest have been about like "Taz" from the looney-tunes)

Thanks for validating my own notion that I don't want to fool around
with trapping raccoons. Never had a close encounter with one, but
they look to me like extremely formidable animals - almost at the
wolverine level.

Sorry, all these "humane solutions" simply don't work. I've tried maybe a dozen times to trap raccoons that were determined to break into my duck hutch. Finally they succeeded, killed the entire flock, and left them...ate NOTHING. They look cute, but they have no place in an urban or semi-rural environment.

Traps? Not a chance. The only animal you will catch is a skunk, and now you have an entirely new problem on your hands. "OK, asshole, you trapped me. Now what?"

Whatever the solution, trapping doesn't work. They are too smart, for one thing; for another, they come out after skunks and foxes do, so if there IS a trap, it's already caught the wrong animal.

P.S. Skunks and foxes go for the eggs; if a fox is hungry it will kill ONE animal and take it back to its lair. Coons kill for pleasure. Like cats. And, um, humans.

Drinking coke kills rodents like rats because the
animal can not burp. Not being able to belch the
stomach swells until the lungs can not have room
to work. I don't know if raccoons can belch or
not.

I always use my live traps with some sort of food my cats don't like. Coons will eat just about anything you leave out for them. I've caught them using plain ol bread. Check local laws on what to do with them once they're caught, in Ohio you can relocate them somewhere else on you're property but they have to remain on your property. Div. of wildlife recommends shooting them so check the laws for where you're at.

Ok, just how long do you think a pan of carbonated pop will hold its carbonation? Not long enough to kill a damn thing. That's why you need to put Golden Malrin in it at a strength that will kill the raccoon. I guess if I were a cat person I wouldn't want my cat drinking that stuff but I'm not so go after it!

This was posted on June 12, 2010. That will be 7 years ago, on June 12,
2017. The carbonization should be nearly gone on June 12, 2017. So, on
that day, I suggest replacing the coke. The good news is that those
coons the poster tried to poison (with coke) in 2010, probably died of
natural causes since that date.

May they Rest in Peace!

Pepsi or Coke will kill racoons if the liquid is laced with commercial fly bait. I believe the acids in the Colas turns the fly bait to cyanide or arsenic and the animal will die very quickly and generally does not even get 6 feet away from the poison site.

OK, now I've been able to quit laughing to type.

When I moved permanently into my cabin located in the Cherokee
National Forest, I found that the squirrels had chewed up most of the
soffit, had gotten in the attic and chewed up wiring insulation and
were just plain nasty.

So I started killing them. First with a .177 air rifle. Then they
got smart enough to get to the top of my front yard tree where the
pellet would not kill 'em.

So out came the custom built English trap gun. Loaded with #8 bird
shot so falling pellets would not hurt anyone. The first opportunity
arose. Said squirrel climbed to the top and started chattering, as if
to mock me.

Ka-bluey!

Another one bites the dust.

All in all, I bagged about 120 of those rats with furry tails. The
coyotes did a fine job of disposing them.

That was 15 years ago. The population has just recovered enough to
become pests again. This time I'm lazy. I use poison. Specifically
the Hawk brand of rectangular cubes available at Tractor Supply.

The squirrels LOVE 'em, not realizing that they're eating their last
meal.

I no longer have any problem with squirrels in my bird feeders. I
like it. The birds like it. Life is good.

BTW, I'm a charter member of PETA. People Eating Tasty Animals.

Could it be possible that a fox or coyote is doing it? They are very sneaky and you won't see them. Just because there are a lot of coons around does not mean they are the culprit. All the coons where I live eat with the cats. I hate raccoons but never had one harm my cats. That being said, there are rogues, although rare of every species that stray outside of the normal behavior zone. Maybe when the coon population explodes they resort to more extreme measures but keep in mind a very secretive and sneaky fox could be at play. I trapped and relocated 40 coons one year because they are so destructive. There is a few left that are driving me bonkers by stealing my pets food and getting into garbage. I feel like poisoning them sometimes myself.

No. Golden Malrin cannot be used for raccoon control. This would be considered an off label usage and is illegal. Plus you would run the risk of poisoning a non-target animal by using it in this manner.

That's not what happens. A seed farmer I know told me that you can hit a racoon with a shotgun and sometimes not kill them. He said that a little pie plate with coke and rat poison would be far more humane...they take 3 steps and die. A gunshot wound can be torture for the animal, and you probably won't get a chance to finish the job.

I, OTH, live in the mountains, am a competitive shooter and killed

groundhogs and at least 100 coons. I always take head shots. When
the bullet hits, life ceases and the vermin simply falls over. I
don't need a second shot.

I had a co-worker (way, way back when I spent time
where others wanted me and paid me to show up)
who had a pretty fair size, and obviously strong,
fast, and skillful dog, who would regularly kill
racoons that would wander into her yard.

I thought WOW! I would not want any of my animals
messing with one of them. We had dug out ponds
in our back yard, and were trying to raise
goldfish, schubunkin, koi etc. I kept thinking
if I just got rid of one, maybe two more, the
problem would be over. 37 racoons later, I
finally realized they were thick and could
reproduce faster than any fish.

Why would you want to kill a raccoon. I've got a lot of land near the forest and it is on a raccoon trail with up to several dozen of them coming through every week because of my water features and fruit trees. I tried trapping them but the numbers caught were enormous and not worth it. I just got a big terrier and his pee and poop scar the living daylights of the raccoons and they don't dare enter my property any more whether my dog is indoors or outdoors. It is just as simple as that. Try anything else and you will fail. RE

Then why don't you come and explain to my son why he has to take shots in his stomach. plus they do a lot of damage so if you want to come and kennel them up and take him home with you that's fine do it otherwise they're going to get a bullet between her eyes

I catch coons all the time. Best bait is nasty canned catfood. Very pungent odor and the coons love it. I use a "two entry live trap". When I get one, I just relocate it up at the big reservoir 15 miles away. Coons lives, my wife is happy, happy wife happy life. Live trap about $50. Cheaper than divorce and a batch of layin hens.

I was attacked by a rabid raccoon that was in my barn that houses my pasture raised chickens. I got bit. The raccoon is dead and was turned into the health dept. for testing. Today I saw more tracks out there and the have-a-heart trap that was set was closed with the bait gone and no animal in it. I need to protect my flock from these animals. Traps do not work well, obviously. They need to be poisoned. It might not sound humane, but the damage they do is unbelievable. And being attacked was absolutely terrifying.

Also, it took several shots with a 22 to kill it.. so I don't think hunting for them is a good idea at all.

Oh, and one more thing... I realized that I was "feeding" something with the rat poison I was putting out long before the attack. So, no, rat poison does not kill raccoons.

Please don't put rat poison out because cats could get it. Please don't harm cats. As far as coons I can understand resorting to poison, but some poisons do not kill them because coons are so darn tough. I you cover the back of the trap with limbs, tarps, or other stuff, they will go in the trap instead of fishing the food out from the side. I have caught and relocated over 50 of them, so I know it can be done. Sure there might be some nights you don't catch one, but you will. If you don't want to catch cats, then use marshmallows to set the trap. Coons love them. Eventually, I got tired of trapping these and resorted to other measures. I am still having problems with them.

I don't like the drowning thought. That seems really cruel. I had one I trapped that almost seemed tame. He took a hot dog right from my hand. Many give you the puppy dog eyes, in the hopes that they will fool you into thinking you can get your hand close, so they can try and rip it to shreds. I have never seen them as vicious as you describe and I have trapped over 50 of them. Maybe they knew you were going to do horrible things to them.
