Why do they do that? Is it that they get blinded and
just sit there dumbly to be nicked or something else?

What type of deer? Might you have noticed that all the ones
feeding right beside the road were female? I believe it's
not quite the right time of year for it, however this behavior
is noticed very often during the rutting season amoungst
female mule deer. As if the poor dears were trying to get
away from something... :^) In this case they stand in the
tall grass with their muzzles sticking just past the curtain
of grass. Since it's the wrong season, I suspect you are
simply talking about deer grazing by the side of the road
and not really sticking their heads over the roadway?

Actually, as my DH and I deerhunt with muzzleloaders and he with a bow
and arrow, I personally think that this is their way of thumbing their
noses at us and saying Nyah,Nyah,Nyah,Nyah,Nyah! BIG GRIN :-)
They probably think we're stupid:-). We cut a road through their
property and expect them to stay on one side of it.

We currently have a faculty member doing research on this question. He
believes that the deer are grazing closer to roads in order increase the
salt intake. Salting the roads in winter, increases the amount in nearby
grass. He collects antlers from road kills to study the mineral content.
I noticed he collected 'odd' things and just had to ask.:)

Also the grasses tend to grow sooner (faster) next to to the road in the spring
because the snow is gone from the salt.

Have you ever seen that one Godzilla movie where Bambi meets Godzilla?
Bambi got stomped. ;)

For a good kluck raise chichens.
The deer are only doing what comes natural, and that is to feed.
They have learned that when the highway depts. keep the "right
of way" mowed regularly, it provides them with nice little salad
bars. That promotes the little clovers and shoots to sprout up
and that's what love to eat. They don't necessarily have a death
wish as you might like to think. Some deer will tend to get
"blinded". Usually, they will bolt at the last instant and
sometimes they make the right choice and live, and sometimes
they make the wrong choice and die. Either way, if you see eyes
reflecting in the headlights, best to just slow wwwayyyy down.

I was recently driving back home one night and almost heat about three
herds of deer. What gets me is how the deer stand grazing right on the
side of the road as if they have some death wish er something.
Why do they do that? Is it that they get blinded and
just sit there dumbly to be nicked or something else?

Well, I know there is one deer who is out of the gene pool. Jumped into
the front of my motorcycle and went to do the grazing in the sky.
Just about tore my leg off. still have the re-bar in my leg.
I had those deer whistles on the front fender, Ask me if they work.

Tape a deer tag and a doe permit to your vehicle. They almost always
keep deer away from me.
