I've heard that there are free land in Minnesota and some other states but the down side is that in Minnesota it's so cold that no one wants to live in the land! Is it true that there are free land??

Minnesota cold? I guess that it is all relative from where you are
sitting. I live in the Manitoba which is directly north of MN and ND. Now
people complain here that it gets cold, but you get used to it. We had a
couple of -40C (-40F) days this past January, but those aren't the norm. I
could be mistaken but I don't think that southern MN gets that cold. I have
visited Minneapolis a number of times and have found the weather great. As
an example, my wife and I went there to visit a friend in December 1992 and
it was -32 C when we left Winnipeg, and eight hours later in Minneapolis we
were basking in -2C weather.

Minnesota is a beautiful state and the weather should not deter anyone from
living or visiting there.

Just my three (inflation) cents.

Yea, and they just got indoor toilets there also...

I heard that they were homesteading 40 acre tracts in International Falls MN
a couple of years ago. If anyone's interested, I think I still have the
material in my files somewhere. But I think they discontinued it...

Jim.

Related True Story:

There was a small town in northern North Dakota that needed more kids in
the local school to keep it going, so a local farmer offered free land under
the condition that people bring their school-age kids and _stay_.

Yes, a number of people took him up on the offer.

No, none of the newcomers stayed after the first couple years.
Whether it was the weather (pun intended) or the isolation or
the mosquitos or the boredom, I know not.

I've met city folk who had to work in North Dakota. Most were bored;
one absolutely hated it, just couldn't realize that skipping stones
across the river is _fun_! (Note: doing this in winter is cheating!)

BTW, I've heard that International Falls gets a bit chilly in winter.
Northern NoDak would beat'em out, it's just that NoDaks can't afford
the thermometers that go that low! :-)

'Course, it is true that NoDak beats 'em out on wind -
the tree just can't slow the wind down enough!

I remember the professor from Louisiana who wore a flight suit to keep warm -
in the Fall -
indoors!
No kidding!
