I don't like the NSA snooping on me, even though I don't have
anything to hide. It just feels wrong, constitutionally.

Looking up how I can protect my messages, I found something called
"Confide" for iOS.
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/confide/id779883419?mt=8

And looking at the advertising, it seems to be 'secure':
https://getconfide.com/

But, you never know what the weak links are (e.g., maybe they keep
a full record of all your communications back at the farm?).

Looking for reviews, I hesitate to trust something called "PC
Magazine", but they have a review, which pretty much says it's
limited, but it works:

Do you have experience or suggestions for a more secure app?

that's because it is wrong, constitutionally.

the built in messaging app has end to end encryption, as do a number of
other messaging apps.

here's a rundown, although confide is not listed:

PCMag is a long-standing, credible, top tier publication and their
recommendations are generally on-point...

Or whether its actually been produced by the NSA either.

No way to tell. We tend to 'trust' companies that are promoting
security and privacy. OTOH, there are hundreds doing so and no
certification that all (or which) are actually doing it.

It looks like a nicely conceived app from what I see there, but it's not
something I feel a need for.

Apple Message is already very strongly encrypted so there is nothing
this app will do that is not already being done against anyone in the
middle unless it's an SMS.
