iPhone case/battery for bike handlebars?

For $100-150, the local bike shop tried to sell me a bundle that does
all sorts of things with iPad to support serious cycling.

Well, my biking is for transportation, not for competition or
recreation. So the only thing they've got that isn't already
on my iPhone is the water-resistant case that fastens to the
handlebars with a quick-mount.

It includes an extension battery, but since I can get anywhere
in the county in ninety minutes, I don't need that either.

Any suggestions for just a similar case/mount for a reasonable price?

The battery part would be nice but I wouldn't pay much for it.

Thanks

A quick search in the Apple Store turned up the iBike Phone Booth Bicycle Mount
for $50:

As someone who has been biking for many years now i'd have to
ask why you would want to bring your ipad or even your iphone?
One spill on the bike and your ipad/iphone will be toast.

You're talking big bucks to replace.

oops, I meant iPhone. I've seen cases in which you would have to try
really hard to damage the phone.

I've had six spills over fifty years. One bent the fork and the front
wheel and left me uninjured and on my feet ten meters away. One left me
and the bike ten meters apart but neither injured. Another, five
meters. One made me buy a new front wheel and bruised my elbow.

And two resulted in lots of blood. But none of them would have damaged
an iPhone in a padded case mounted on the handlebars.

If I had an iPhone in my pocket (where I normally carry it) for the
first one I mentioned, it would have left my pocket as I was rolling in
the air over a busy street.

Looks good, though a bit pricey. I may look stop at an Apple store on
one of my trips and see whether they have one for me to examine. Web
images don't do the job.

Except if you're hit by a car and you land on the hood of a car or
if you get hit by a car going fast or you get hit by a car door being
opened and I would suspect your iphone would be toast.

At $700 to buy a new iphone i'd be hesitant to chance it.
I'd seriously consider leaving the iphone at home and
use a cheap phone that doesn't require a contract.

After all if you're wearing a helmut for your head
think about what that same accident would do
to your $700 iphone.

iPhone: $ 650
bicycle: $1500
head: priceless

Guess I'd better leave all of them at home.

You could have a look at the Dahoon BioLogic mount its on its 3rd
generation is rainproof. Used a first generation one with iPhone 3G
until the joint failed and I wanted to upgrade to iPhone 4S. The new
mount looks better designed for protection.

I've gone for Ultimate addons for my iPhone 4S case, designed for
motorbikes.

Looks pretty good, but $50 is getting up there.

I am trying the free version of their tracking app.

Pad $3 for "imapmyride" and I'm angry--you aren't even allowed to look
at the app until you give them all the personal data they want for an
account on their webserver.

This one (BikeBrain) looks good, but one thing is suspicious:

Calories burned and power output can be calculated from weight, gear
ratio, slope, and wind resistance.

Wind resistance is determined by the shape of the bike and rider and by
the speed and direction of the wind. Since the latter varies too much,
and they don't ask anything about the shape of the bike, what's the
point of asking for height?

Age and gender have NO bearing on calories, so why do they ask? Useful
for marketing, no doubt.

Gear ratio makes a lot of difference—on my bicycle, I cruise fifteen to
twenty miles per hour. On my tricycle, I work my butt off to reach ten
miles per hour because the blasted thing is geared so low, I can't move
my legs any faster! But they don't ask for gear ratio.

I suspect ait temperature and humidity make a lot of difference, but
I could be wrong.

So do I. But that is pretty irrelevant to the question of how to mount
your phone on the handlebars. Or the side argument of whether its
stupid to do so.
