When my phone is sleeping, I can open it and see the time without
putting on my fogey glasses. But if it is active, I need to find a
clock app or put on my glasses to read the time.

I downloaded a few free clock apps, to try to put them into
notifications so I could quickly swipe down and open them, but none of
them appeared in settings.

Is there a way to get a big clock application that I can get from the
notifications screen?

That is available some of the time. Sometimes I need to be less
obvious.

I would imagine you could do that by jbing your phone. Otherwise, probably
not.

Why not just double click the power button, that will take you straight
to the unlock screen with the big clock, then just swipe to get back to
where you were?

That's what I do now. I'd like to find something that works better.
The Notifications menu is something better for many uses, and would be
ideal.

Is this an eyesight thing? There's a clock on the notification screen.
