We wanted to post this information regarding an experience we had
upgrading our iPhone 3G to an iPhone 3GS and making a profit.

Our iPhone 3G was due to have it's initial year warranty with Apple
Computer expire on November 13th this year. During the past year the
back of the case had developed the typical cracking that has been
reported with the iPhone 3G models.

A few days before the warranty expired we went on the Apple website
and requested a Genius Bar appointment at the local Apple Store. We
arrived at the Apple Store for the scheduled appointment time, handed
the Genius Bar tech our cracked case iPhone and he said no problem
(after checking it with a special light for any water damage),
reached into a drawer behind him filled with shiny new iPhones and
gave us a Brand New iPhone 3G.

We asked him to keep the iPhone in the box and then took a trip to the
local AT&T store. Since our contract with Apple had now past 2
years, we were eligible for a reduced price iPhone 3GS. We chose the
iPhone 3GS 16GB for $199.00. They took the sim card from our old
(new) iPhone 3G and put it into the iPhone 3GS, had us sign a new
2-year contract and we were on our way with a brand new shiny iPhone
3GS 16GB model within 10 minutes.

Now on to the part to making the profit. As you can see now, we have
two NEW iPhones. One new 16GB iPhone 3G that was the warranty
replacement and our new iPhone 3GS that we just paid $199.00 for at
the AT&T store

We are now $199.00 in the hole

We took the new iPhone 3G warranty replacement, put it on eBay for a
7-day auction and it sold for $445.00. We took the pictures below
and put then in the listing description, included the original box
from our 1st iPhone 3G plus the old charger, ear buds, booklet, etc

Ebay charges us a fee of $16.89 cents based off of the sale price for
the phone and the listing fee was free. We paid $15.00 with
insurance to ship the item. Boxes and packaging material was free.

So now where are we at

-$199.00 for new iPhone 3GS
+$445.00 for selling the iPhone 3G on eBay
-$ 16.89 ebay fees
-$ 15.00 shipping fees

Net Profit $214.11 to upgrade to a superior piece of
technology

At $445.00 the buyer got a bargain on a no-contract new iPhone 3G as
to buy a new iPhone from Apple without a contract

* 8GB iPhone 3G - $532.68 (includes tax)
* 16GB iPhone 3GS - $639.43 (includes tax)
* 32GB iPhone 3GS - $746.18 (includes tax)
* All require a credit check but NO CONTRACT according to the
Apple Store

Could we have made even more profit? Maybe so but we are happy with
how it all turned out.

So, in brief:

- you conned Apple,

- possibly broke your agreement with AT&T (I don't know
if the small print of the "upgrade" allows you to sell the
old iPhone)

- possibly conned the eBay buyer (I don't know how
much a new 3G costs from a store)

- encouraging other people to do the same

and you're "happy" with all that ... just about sums up the selfish greed of
95% of the human race. :-(

Get a life already.

You obviously inhabit a very life-tight cocoon.
If you have nothing more than other folks' minor playing of the system to
worry about, I'd find something more worthy to invest your generalised anger
in (the are plenty of deserving causes, trust me).
So quit your phucking bitching because you don't have the balls to play the
system yourself - or get laid and give the rest of us a break from your
sour, small-minded, self-obsessed, self-righteous bitching FFS.

"Minor playing of the system"?!? Someone has to pay for the stealing (and
yes it IS stealing) of these idiots, and it's the rest of us who have to do
so via paying a higher price.

Not to mention that some dimwits who get away with "minor" illegal activites
then think they can get away with more, which is how most criminals start.

No, he kept the replacement in the box as it was given to him.
In the ebay ad he " ...included the original box
from our 1st iPhone 3G plus the old charger, ear buds, booklet, etc."

Sounds like a straightforward, up-front transaction to me.
I'd do the same thing.
Everyone wins - Apple sold a new phone, AT&T gets their 2-year renewal,
and the 3G buy gets a deal on a no-contract iPhone.

To the OP: Thanks for sharing.

To the whiners: Get a life
