Is there any way to roll back updates?

I still have an iPhone 3G. I made the mistake of installing the
latest Google update,
which is so painfully slow that it's essentially useless. It's
particularly annoying
because one of the comments in the release notes was "better support
for 3G".
Is there any way to roll back to the previous version, which was slow
but
still usable?
Since Google is known for writing very efficient code (their search
engine, Chrome, Picasa,
etc), this seems like a plot to get me to buy an Android.

The latest update of what by Google? Do you mean the latest version of
the Google Mobile app, Google Earth or something else? Whatever it is,
the details are similar.

That comment probably means "better support for communication over 3G
networks", not "better support for the iPhone 3G". You might like to
find the support page for the app and complain that it doesn't work very
well on an iPhone 3G, and ask Google to improve its performance again

When you download an iOS app update in iTunes, the previous version is
moved to the Trash on a Mac, and I assume it is moved to the Recycle Bin
on Windows.
If the update was downloaded on the iPhone and then synced to iTunes,
the same applies - the old version is moved to trash (or recycle bin) at
the point the new version gets copied over.
As long as you haven't emptied trash or the recycle bin yet, you can
drag the old version back out of there (e.g. to your Desktop), then (on
a Mac):
1. Quit iTunes.
2. Go to the "~/Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Mobile Applications/" folder
3. Locate the appropriate "Google [something].ipa" file, move it to
trash, and replace it with the older version.
(Windows is similar, just the iTunes Music folder is in a different
place.)
Now launch iTunes again and it should sync the older application back to
your iOS device.
There is a catch: iTunes doesn't have a way to ignore updates you don't
want, so it will keep offering to update that app to the latest version.
You will have to ignore the available update until a later update fixes
the problem. That means you can't use the "Update All" button.
If you had already emptied trash, then to get the old version back you
would need to restore it from a backup you took of your computer at an
earlier point when the old version existed. On a Mac, this is easy if
you are using Time Machine.
If you don't have a backup containing the older version, and you have
already emptied trash, there is no way to get the old version back
again.

Thanks. It was the Google Mobile App. I updated it on the iPhone,
so based on your comments, I think if I delete it from the phone,
it should sync from the old version on my iTunes account.
