I'm a long time user of Gmail and make extensive use of the label
capability, especially with automatic filtering which assigns labels to
incoming mail in my Inbox. It helps me to quickly distinguish mail
from certain people or certain topics.

Google has released their new version of the Gmail iOS app which is
absolutely horrendous in appearance and functionality. It seems the
functionality is slowly improving with subsequent updates, but the vast
reviews on the App Store wish for the old app back. I had installed
the new version but quickly reverted to the old one via iTunes after a
brief test run.

I will continue to use the old Gmail app as long as I can, but Google
has a way of forcing people into their newer products. In lieu of
testing tens of other mail apps again, does anyone know a way to make
the native iOS Mail app display labels for individual messages in the
Inbox? I don't know if there is an add-on that can do that (doubtful)
or some other method you've discovered.

iOS shows labels as mailboxes. It you have messages labeled "Friends"
and message labeled "Nemeses" iOS will show this for Gmail:

Inbox
|-- Friends
|-- Nemeses

'I'll tell you this!' shouted Rincewind. 'I'd rather trust me than
history! Oh, shit, did I just say that?'

But iOS won't show the message in the Inbox with labels nor show
messages with more than one label. Just looking at mailboxes is
insufficient. If you've used the Gmail labels for incoming messages
you know what I mean.

If Mail doesn't do what you want, you could look at other alternatives:

Personally, the idea of Google reading all of my email prevents me from
using their mail service for anything more than truly trivial things. So
I don't rely on Google-only features like their labels, and Apple's mail
client works fine for my GMail needs as a result.

E-mail sent to this address may be devoured by my ravenous SPAM filter.
I often ignore posts from Google. Use a real news client instead.

Pretty sure it will show messages with multiple labels. Somewhere. It
will not show them in all the "label" mailboxes.

From experience (I use gmail with both Thunderbird on Windows and iOS
mail), an email with a number of gmail labels does appear as an entry in
multiple mail folder corresponding to each label. But you'd have to
know which folders it's in as there would be no indication beside the
email in the inbox as to which labels/folders it was associated with -
that's because under imap, gmail turns all the labels into sub-folders
of [Gmail] in the client.
