Awful fits and stops and starts, and phone verifying and syncing with
each operation.... gotta be a bug they know about at this point.

Tell us more about your system. I have been using 8.1 heavily and have not
noticed the problems you described. I may be related to the particulars of
your system. I am unclear what you mean by "phone verifying" and don't
recall seeing anything like that.

I'm so sick about these issues that I'm seriously considering going back to

that there are a lot of things I really like on my iPhone. *sigh*

I only got the "verifying" thing once, after a sync that failed to
complete.

However, I am periodically, and with no discernable pattern to when it
happens, prompted to select or create a new library when I start
iTunes. Canceling that and re-starting opens up iTunes with no
problem.

Consider yourself lucky. I've been reading hundreds of others with the
same problems I'm having, so I know it's not on my end. All started with the
Itunes 8.1 update. WinXP SP2, jailbroken IPhone 2.2.1, I manage the syncing
myself. On the top it hangs on "verifying your iphone" and/or "syncing" with
every song I add. If I add 4 or 5 at a time, it takes forever to update.
Maddening!

Although it doesn't exactly match your described issue, I also had
problems syncing due to the calendar. I turned off calendar syncing,
synced, and re-enabled it again and that fixed the problem.

I understand now - and sympathize. I am on a Mac and don't have any of these
issues. I suffer all kinds of problems with Windows PCs at work and won't
put up with it for my personal systems.

Thanks - but I tried that already. Also I tried to replace the iPhone

Yeah, that what I came across, too. Ther it says to disable the
*contanct*-sync. BTDT - no T-Shirt.

Well, I don't really have any real problems with Windows Systems at
all, and since system administration a large Windows network ist my
job, I don't really feel like sitschiung to a Mac for my personal
needs. Although I find myself drooling over a Mac Mini every no and
then ... ;)

If MobileMe would work correctly, and also work behind a proxy, that
would help. But every time I tried it it made a mess out of my
calendar.

Jailbreak -> BossPrefs -> Fix UserDir Permissions.
Worked for me with at least 3 sync issues...

What system are you using? I have 8.1 under Windows
XP with no (new) trouble whatsoever. Could this be the one
case where the Windows version works better than
the Mac version?

I do have one continuing problem since the old version.
About once or twice a week, when I go to sync the iPhone,
I get an error something like "Sync failed because an
error connecting with device (OK)", and I have to power
cycle the iPhone. Does anyone know anything
about this?

I always hat "funny symptoms" after using jailbreak, so currently I'm
trying to avoid this.

After trying all the advice, I downloaded it again, and hit the repair
option. Now it works! May have been a critical corrupt file, that made keep
verifying and syncing?

You mean downloading & repair-installing iTunes again? I'll give that a
try.

Since it tries to overwrite files, do a complete uninstall... then
install a fresh copy.

FWIW: "Reset sync history" finally solved my problem.
