Suddenly my iphone 4s wants me to enter the network password. The password is 7 digits long, but apparently the iphone expects an 8-digit password, because the join button becomes dark blue (= active) only after I add an eighth digit. Obviously with the 8th digit the password is not correct anymore. Adding a character and then removing it is no solution.
previously the same iphone worked fine on this network. Two other computers continue to work fine on the same network.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
CW

the shortest wpa password is 8 characters.

if you are using wep, you need to switch to wpa or just disable the
password since wep is only slightly better than nothing.

Thanks, but do you mean I have to change the modem settings or is this something I can change in the iPhone settings?

both. what you do on one needs to be done on the other.

you don't say what router you have but if it supports wpa2, use that.

We have an Orange "livebox", an ADSL wireless router.
From my computer settings I see that it syas under security 'WPA/WPA2 personal'. Apparently here the short password is no problem. I prefer not to change the settings of the router, beacuse I don.t want to take the risk that computer(s) also stop working.
Where do I change the security settings of the iPhoneif I wanted todo that?

that's strange. wpa/wpa2 is 8-63 chars, and you really want something
at least 20 chars that isn't a word in a dictionary.

you would have to change the password on all computers if you change it
on the router.

settings>wifi. when trying to join a network, you tell it which type of
encryption it is and enter the password. to change it for networks
you've already joined you'd need to first delete it (little blue arrow,
tap forget this network) and re-join it.

Actually I have in my paperwork a very long (28 chars+spaces) security key which is perhaps what you are talking about;but what the network is asking for is the connection password, which really is only 7 chars. The phone is literally asking
'Enter the password for Livebox-37CD" '
Tobe sure, I tried the long security code, but as expected this did not work either.

I am afraid I don't see the forget this network option. I do sea a white-on-blue arrow, but when I tap it, there are only settings for DHCP/ IP address etc.

i don't know why there would be two passwords.

you didn't join it yet so there's nothing to forget. it's already
'forgotten'.

Can you change the wifi password? I can change mine. Just change
it to something that is 8 digits. Maybe the same as it is now with
an added 0 or something?

Well I have here the info from Orange (it is in French) with a whole series of codes and numbers, but it is true the word password is used only twice, for the connection and for the 'messagerie' , the mail service of Orange.

It worked previously,so then I joined. It also still detects the router, so I would think it has not completely forgotten.

I would not how to do that. Also, I am reluctant to change things that might cause problems with the connections of the computers that still communicate with the router.

But it worked previously so then I joined. Also, it detects the router, so it has not forgotten it, I presume.

I think what they are trying to tell you is that you have no choice.
The minimum pass phrase is 8 characters. In the past, your devices
did not enforce that, but now your iPhone is. Change the pass phrase
on your router (and as other have said, make it long but easy to
remember). Something like "MyPasswordUsedToBexxxxxxx" where xxxxxxx
is your old 7 character password. Even better, add some special
characters. Then go to all the computers/phones/tablets that connect
to your network and change to the new one. Yes, that can be a pain,
but get it over with and just do it.

It's easier than you might think. And if something goes wrong, you
can reset your router and it will revert to the old password. At
least, that's how mine works. Other devices work that way, too.

Had to create a 'guest' login and pw for a new iPhone. I pads windows and android work just fine with 7 letter pw. Security is AES. Why does apple have to be so bloody awkward?
