Have you checked the fixes for speeding up your 3GS? Might be better than
downgrading, which you can always do if the fixes don't fixit.

He might have read ALL of them, but he doesn't have a 3GS
That's a known issue. It's been discussed here recently, and several
here have reported speed is returned to normal.

Monique, do an upgrade to 4.01, and then a *hard reset* twice in
sequence. It improves the speed a lot.

Same here. I actually hate my iPhone at the moment.
I wish Apple would realize that iOS4 made older iPhones useless, and
would put out an official way of rolling back from iOS4 to iOS3

Lots of people report once thy apply the suggested fix, everything is
better. Have you tried the suggested fix for this problem?
Unfortunately not always it didn't improve mine

You mean the iOS 4.1 Beta 2?

Nope. That's not what I mean. Try this:

How sure are you that you actually performed the hard reset correctly
both times?

I did the "Restore factory settings and do not restore from backup"
option. That actually helped a good deal - 3G-owners should try that:

Yes, I've read that works as well.
After doing a forced reboot as suggested in other threads I found my 3G
speeded up and is now not much slower than under OS3.
Pretty soon apple will have to run two or more OS on the iphone
otherwise the 3G will hold back the 4 or the 3G will becoe completely
unusable.
Mike
Didn't work for myself either.
However, I was able to downgrade and jailbreak using
the 3.1.2_7D11 ipsw and redsn0w 0.9.4.
Playing with Cydia now, neat stuff!
Now I need to tether it to laptop and I'll be pleased.
Thanks to everyone for all your help and pointers!

As sure as I can be. I followed the instructions and I have actually done
it quite a few times with no effect.
I just don't think anything going to work with my phone as I'd tried that as
well.
I think Apple's making them slow on purpose so Jobs can sell them a new
IP4....
No other computer device goes into crawl mode just because you update the
OS that I know of.....
Updating usually makes them even more slick than they were!

Unless is an MS based system. lol Even my BlackJack II slowed down
when updated, though that was a BREEZE to downgrade compared to this
frigging iPhone.

Well you're a complete idiot; so that's no surprise.
There may be other things to try, or better ways to fix it.
Have you contacted an Apple expert about it yet?:

you got it right. the original iphone can use 3.1.3 and the 3g shipped
with 2.0 and there's no going backwards.

Apple is investigating reports that the latest iPhone operating
system causes problems for users of the iPhone 3G, after a series of
complaints on Apple support forums and technology blogs. Apple is
aware of the reports and is looking into the matter, a spokeswoman
told Digits.
No doubt will make it worse next time to drive further handset upgrades.

The only reason people don't see more "crawl mode" is thanks to the
companies enforcing a minimum spec for newer versions of their software.
If you work around that you will see "crawl mode", for example installing
Mac OS X 10.4 or 10.5 on a G3 Mac.
There's an item on MacRumors.com today saying that Apple is investigating
the slow down on older iPhone after being updated to iOS 4.

10.5 doesn't even boot on a G3, so that is more like iOS 4 with an
original iPhone.
A fairer comparison would be 10.5 with early PowerMac G4 models: it
officially requires 867 MHz or faster, but actually works right back to
a 350 MHz PowerMac G4 with AGP Graphics. Slowly.
It appears Apple didn't do a very good job of measuring real world
performance of iOS 4 on an iPhone 3G. More optimization is needed.
Hopefully iOS 4.1 will improve the situation.

Good. (Not that I have one, but for everyone else's sake.)

I'm in the UK, when I asked in the Apple store they were aware it slowed
down the 3G and didn't offer any advice on downgrading the software.
I couldn't rmember what the official cut-off OS version was and which one
could be forced to install by hacking.

iPhone 4 is released here in New Zealand today, probably at the same prices
as the previous model and still stuck (officially) with useless Vodafone ...
not that Telescum NZ is much better. Hopefully 2Degrees' 3G data prices will
be sensible.
> iPhone 4 is released here in New Zealand today,
<http://www.nzherald.co.nz/technology/news/article.cfm?c_id=5&objectid=1

Tech fans excited about the launch of the iPhone 4 have been left
confused and angry as it appears the device won't be available in New
Zealand today.
All references to the new gadget were removed from official iPhone
telco Vodafone New Zealand's website yesterday.
And came back again later. You can now order an iPhone 4 on contract
from the Vodafone NZ site, just not buy a phone by itself.
The disappearance from the web site was probably scheduled downtime due
to it being reconstructed to show the ordering page, possibly delayed
while they waited for final information. Yesterday their iPhone page had
a "coming soon" filler with a form for registering to get information.
Evidence so far suggests there was a shipping error, and there isn't
enough stock in NZ for normal sales.
About 11:40, Vodafone sent out a text message alerting those who
registered for information that the iPhone 4 would be on sale from noon
today in selected stores, but only for people getting one on a two year
contract.
Once they have enough stock, I expect normal sales will resume. Apple
should also be selling direct from the online store soon.
Vodafone are the iPhone distributors in New Zealand, while the Apple
online store is run from Australia.
Don't know yet whether the "shipping error" was Apple or Vodafone's
fault, but both are culpable for the communication problem: it was
Vodafone's responsibility, but Apple probably has to take some of the
blame for requiring secrecy prior to launch day.
There are a lot of angry potential iPhone 4 buyers out there who queued
up from the wee small hours only to find that they couldn't get an
iPhone 4, compounded by being told later that they would have to come
back again later in the day (if they are lucky).
Not good.

I'm afraid the instructions weren't complete: you have pray too!
Non-beleivers get no free upgrades, you see...
Ooops, I almost forgot: forget about God, it's Jobs you must pray!
Oh dear, looks like yet another anti-Apple dumbass. :-(
Actually, it's one of the same trolls that has popped up here from time
to time. Filter accordingly.
I found the 4.01+2 hard reset things helped a bit, but the 3G still
much slower
than it was under OS3, and certain apps are much slower
under 4.0. In particular, the Google app (which I use a lot) REALLY,
REALLY sucks under 4.0. If there's a computer anywhere within a
5 minute walk, it's faster than waiting for the iPhone app to respond.
