Google Maps stuck on Waiting....

I have google maps installed on my iphone 5c which is up to date as far as
IOS goes yet google maps is stuck.
The icon is darkened and below it it says waiting. The icon will not do
anything and I have tried uninstalling it but it won't do it. I have gone to
the app store but it doesn't list any updates for it.
I have gone to google help and not been able to find any info at all. Any
ideas how to unistall this waste of space.

have a setting enabled where it will only download if connected to
WiFi? What happens if you press the button that started the download
in the first place? Maybe another option is to Sync the phone and use
iTunes to mess around with it.
