Already Jailbroken if that matters, but can't seem to find anything
that works. Anyone know of a reader, I don't care what kind of file
type although epub would be my first choice. Thanks for any ideas.

apple ibooks supports epub and pdf and it's free.

there was an issue with ibooks and jailbroken phones a while back but
it's long been fixed. you don't say which phone, ios version or how you
jailbroke it, so that *might* be an issue if you tried ibooks before.

The subject line says "Ipod Touch 4.2.1", which almost certainly means he has an
iPod Touch running iOS 4.2.1. Probably 2nd generation, which can't run 4.3.

The current version of iBooks requires iOS 5.0 or later.

good catch. i missed that.

unfortunately, very few apps support ios versions that old, so the
options will be very limited.

however, stanza supports ios 3. try that.

What about Kindle? It will read unprotected .mobi files in addition to
Amazon's formats. I use Calibre to convert my epubs to .mobi, then upload
them to my free Kindle account (you can do it via email or a small "Send
to Kindle" app for PC) and then download them in the app. Amazon gives
you 5GB free cloud storage for sending "documents" to Kindles or Kindle
apps. Most of my "documents" just happen to be ebooks I didn't buy from
Amazon.

kindle requires 5.0 or later.

It figures. Maybe the fragmentation of the Android platform penny so bad
after all. The percentage of Android devices in use running older OS
versions encourages developers to target those versions. It's far easier
to "write off" the relatively few iOS devices EOL'd at 3.x and 4.x.

It would be nice if the iTunes store kept the last working versions of
apps that ran on 3.x, 4.x, and 5.x to serve to devices incapable of
upgrading.

that would be nice, as well as not offer updates when it knows you
don't own a device that can run it.

IBooks does not work with my older Gen 2 Ipod Touch. But on my newer
one I used IBooks at first and it seemed fine, BUT I have since used
Stanza and I find it much better and much more stable....but you are
correct about the tapping thing...I just don't miss that at all.

Unfortunately this Ipod has been sitting idle for a few years, so I
never even had a book reader on it. If I had known any of this I would
have downloaded a book reader long ago and just never updated the
Ipod...but oh well. I find it amazing that there is no one on the
internet that has a website to download old apps....there are tons of
sites that have old versions of computer software. Oh well.

the apps can only come from the app store and are tied to your apple
id. you can save older versions yourself if you want.

I have an older Touch on ios4 -- and of course even the "newer" devices are
getting grayer by the day and at least one on ios5 can't use the latest
version of an app I use -- I've been saving old app versions for just this
purpose. I was lucky to learn the lesson, albeit the hard way, while
certain old versions were still in my recycle bin.

'goes off' means crash??

contact the developer. they say it works in 3.0 or later.

Dont compatible with 4.3.3.
Update broke it on iOS4

by Happy gamer =)

Good to hear it works on iOS5 now. But it no longer works on iOS4.
Don't upgrade if you're using iOS4

by DigitalManOfAction

I loved Stanza, but sadly the update now crashes everytime I open it
on iOS4. What a shame - a once great app is now unusable in iOS4.

Guess those of us with a 2nd gen ipod touch are shit out of luck then
(as we can’t update past 4.2.1)? Stanza was being bitchy for one
reason or other and I made the mistake of updating it to see if that
helped. Which, of course it did not

Tim Bergel // Apr 22, 2012 at 4:41 pm

I had this problem with my 2nd gen iPod touch – found my old copy of
Stanza 3.1 and used iFunBox to re-install it without deleting 3.2.
Worked perfectly and all my books are still there.

i'm not saying there's not a problem.

what i'm saying is that the developer said it works with 3.0 and later.

if this is not the case and it crashes, then it's a bug that needs to
be fixed or the developer needs to set the app to require a later
version of ios.

Freading is a very good epub reader app which I found after a lot of search (and research) which is worth giving a try. I no longer can get iBooks to my old iPod 2g but somehow Freading helped me get back to my iPod reading habit. This is compatible with 4.0 or up.
