Last week our older TV in the bedroom bit the bullet, and since the
Olympics was on the spousal unit wanted a replacement right away. Got
the Samsung UHD un40mu6290 at Costco
<costco.com/Samsung-40%22-Class-(39.9%22-Diag.)-4K-Ultra-HD-LED-LCD-TV.product.100381127.html>

One nice feature of the TV is that you can mirror your smart phone
screen to the TV. Very useful for showing photos and videos. While I've
managed to mirror our Android phones, I can't figure out how to mirror
my wife's iPhone or my iPad. It's a peer to peer Wi-Fi connection from
the phone and it's built into the TV.

I looked on the Apple App store but I don't see any mirroring/casting
apps that work peer to peer and cast the screen. Do I need an AppleTV
box to mirror iOS devices? There must be an app or some way to do peer
to peer mirroring without buying any more devices.

you didn't look very hard. samsung has its own screen sharing app:
<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/samsung-smart-view/id858283863?mt=8>

however, an apple tv would be a much better user experience, and you
won't even need a phone to drive it.

You probably just need to install the "Samsung Connect" app from the
App Store onto your iOS devices.

I contacted Samsung. There is no peer to peer casting or mirroring for
iOS devices, only for Android devices. You can mirror by purchasing an
app from the App Store, but it doesn't do peer to peer, you have to have
the TV and the phone connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

I'm almost never not connected to the same WiFi network at home. Also,
with an Apple TV, no app or setup is required.

which is normally the case, so this is not an issue whatsoever.

Techncially you don't have to purchase anything. The "Samsung Connect"
app for iOS is free and should do mirroring from the iPhone / iPad to
the TV (and vice versa, I think):
<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/samsung-connect/id1222822904>

No shit. I'm almost *always* connected to my home WiFi network.

The app is here:
<https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/samsung-smart-view/id858283863>

Two stars. But I don't think it's Samsung's fault even though the
reviews blame Samsung. From all my reading on this, it looks like you
have to have an Apple TV box to do Peer-to-Peer, over Wi-Fi, from an iOS
device, using AirPlay.

Obviously Apple is not going to allow AirPlay to be included in smart
televisions from Samsung, or anyone else, since it would eliminate part
of the need for an Apple TV box, and Apple is not going to support
Miracast on iOS, for the same reason. Roku and Samsung both support
Miracast, and I would guess that other TVs support Miracast as well,
since it's and Android standard.

There are a couple of dongles that support both Airplay & Miracast to
HDMI i.e. <https://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B074YYYMNT>. But the goal
here is to decrease the number of devices, cables, power adapters, and
remotes. I can always transfer photos and videos from my iOS devices to
my Android devices if I want to display them on the TV.

There's a desire by professionals to be able to do presentations from a
phone or tablet, instead of having to use a laptop. AirPlay and Miracast
enable this sort of thing. I.e. I wanted to cast from my phone to a
commercial projector that had only VGA and component video so I bought
one of these: <https://www.amazon.com/dp/B010WXTNO8> but the VGA port
doesn't actually work because it thinks anything from a phone is DRM
content and blocks it from going out over VGA. The Donwell
Airplay/Miracast dongle is only HDMI but you can use an HD Fury HDMI to
VGA cable to get VGA. I used that in a presentation a couple of months
ago and it went well, but there is a perceptible delay when changing slides.

third parties support airplay in speakers and other media devices,
including from sonos, their direct competitor for apple's homepod, as
well as bose, sony and others.

unfortunately, video is saddled with drm issues, notably hdcp in
displays, which makes third party airplay video a 'bag of hurt'.

in your living room??

you bought a samsung tv for your house, not for an auditorium.

normally, where presentations are given, there is hdmi wired to where
the presenter would stand.

yet another fabricated issue.

Possibly that's a newer, renamed version of the same app, but it's
still free. I got the "Samsung Connect" name from Samsung's support
website searching for mirroring with the TV's model number.

Shame. You could have saved alot of money getting a TCL.

Knowing Samsung, it is some custom crap they intentionally made shitty
and non-compliant.

Many TVs (most?) have Chromecast and/or Roku built in, which makes
screen sharing simple. I swore off Samsung products about 5 years ago
though, and haven't regretted it once.

An Apple TV will do this, but for most video, so will a Chromecast.
