Irritatingly, the thing has just re-set itself in the middle of a phone
call. By which I mean the call dropped, the apple logo appeared and the
the phone froze. After a couple of minutes it started back up.
My question - is this something I can expect to happen? To be in the
middle of an important call and have the iphone decide to do some
housekeeping or something? Any suggestions as to what might have been
going on? I've just plugged it into iTunes and there doesn't seem to
have been an upgrade or anything.
Not terribly clever, IMHO...

it rebooted itself for some reason.

that's not normal.
I'll say it's not.. googling the problem elsewhere turns up over a
thousand people with their 3gs rebooting during a call since upgrading
to ios4. And no solution from Apple.
Now I'm the proud owner of a smartphone that can't make phone calls.
Brilliant, Mr Jobs.

Mine hasn't. If it ever did, I'd take it back in a heartbeat. (My
warranty would cover that.)
Steve
Yes, mine reboots four or five minutes into every call I make. Not a
moment's trouble until I "upgraded" to ios4. There's a lot of info
here... http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19512_7-20012962-233.html
with some people saying it's hardware, some that it's software. And the
usual deafening silence from Apple.
Yes, Steve, taking it back will be my option too. I plan to leave it a
few more days to see if Apple comes up with a solution first, just to
avoid the hassle of restoring everything...
You haven't tried to solve the problem yourself?

Certainly have. In the last two days I've tried every suggestion in the
cnet thread. Nothing works. Hasn't for anybody else, either.
More research seems to suggest it may be a problem specific to the way
the temperature sensor reads the iphone's temperature in certain batches
of handsets; but that's not proven yet.
I'd bring it into your nearest Apple store for warranty service or
replacement if I were you.
Got the exact same problem here with my 3Gs. Funny thing is if i switch
to hands free the problem seems solved. Mayby my ear is too warm...
