* Six Members of Memon Family Arrested
New Delhi, Aug 26 (PTI) In a major breakthrough, six members of
the Memon family including, Abdul Razak Memon, were arrested by the
Central Bureau of Investigation.
A CBI spokesman said today, the arrests were made here yesterday and
they included, two women of the Memon family.
Those arrested were, Abdul Razak Memon, his wife, Hanifa Razak
Memon, Yusuf Abdul Razak Memon, Suleman Abdul Razak Memon, his wife
Rubina Suleman Memon, and Issa Abdul Razak Memon.
Four of these carried a reward of Rs one lakh each while the CBI had
announced Rs 25,000 for the arrest of Hanifa and Rubina, the spokesman
added.
The CBI had earlier arrested Yakub Memon, a prime accused in the
Bombay blast case, on August five.
The CBI which had issued Interpol 'red corner' alert
notices for 24 of the 44 absconders including the members of
Memon family had during May this year announced cash rewards
leading to the arrest of the absconders.
Those arrested yesterday included parents of Ibrahim
Abdul Razak Memon alias Tiger Memon, three of his brothers and
the wife of his brother.
Soon after the arrest of Yakub Memon, the CBI had
sounded the Interpol to locate members of Memon family in
Karachi, Pakistan, following disclosures made by Yakub.
Yakub Memon had told the interrogators of the special
task force of the CBI that the members of his family had left
Bombay for Dubai, prior to the serial blasts that rocked the
metropolis on March 12. they later left Dubai for Karachi, the
CBI said.
The bureau said that documents seized from Yakub Memon
also indicated that the family had been shifted from Karachi
to Bangkok for some period during April 1993.
* Indian Jewel Merchant Missing in Taiwan
Taipei, Aug 26 (Reuter) An Indian jewel merchant has
gone missing in Taiwan carrying diamonds worth taiwan $6
million (230,000) and police said today they suspected he had
been robbed and murdered.
The Hong Kong-based trader, identified as Masalia Manish
Arvindkumar, 24, arrived in Taipei from the British colony on
July 29 and has been missing since August 10, said an officer
with the foreign affairs police.
"we suspect it is a robbery-murder case and have
identified certain suspects," he said. he declined to give
further details.
Arvindkumar has frequently visited Taiwan for business.
He arrived last month to look for buyers for the diamonds,
which belonged to an uncle based in Hong Kong, local
newspapers said.
Arvindkumar was found Missing after his uncle
failed to reach him by telephone from hong kong and reported
the case to Taiwan police, the newspapers said.
* BJP-Shiv Sena Observes Strike in Bombay
Bombay, Aug 26 (PTI) Sporadic incidents of
stone-throwing at trains and buses were reported from the
distant suburbs even as the BJP-Shiv sena bandh to condemn the
killing of city corporator Ramdas Nayak evoked a partial
response in the metropolis today.
Reserve bank and state government offices were open and
transactions at nationalised and foreign banks were
negligible. there was no trading at major commodities and
bullion markets and the bombay stock exchange trading ring wore
a deserted look in the absence of brokers, though the market
was officially open.
Stone-pelting mobs attempted to stall services on the
western and central railways. Five signals at Vikhroli station
on the central railway were damaged by mobs within half-an hour
after the bandh began at midnight. At Mulund station, an irate
crowd forced the motorman to pull down the pentogram. The
look-out glass of the motorman's cabin was also smashed at
the station.
On the western railway, bandh supporters squatted on
the tracks, paralysing the services. Several long-distance
trains were also running behind schedule by an hour. An
incoming train from Jaipur was held up between Borivali and
Bhayender.
Buses were targetted by stone-pelting mobs at 31 places
in the city and suburbs. Two conductors, a driver and a
passenger were injured in the incidents.
