INS was established on June 10, 1933,to administer and render immigration and naturalization service(http://www.uscitizenship.info/) to the people.
It protected & enforced the laws of naturalization; tackled illegal immigration; detained& deported illegals.
It is now defunct and a part of its functions are carried out by the USCIS
