I read the message from the mom going to Europe with
children who bedwet and daywet.
I am from Holland. My husband is American. We lived
in Amsterdam. Now we live in the U.S. since August.
We will go back to visit this summer.
Many kids in Holland who are 4-6 wear diapers. Many
at night. Some at day. This is no problem. Many
parents prefer them while travelling, etc. They
are available everywhere.
I have two daughters. Mary is 5 1/4. Lauren is 4
since two weeks. Mary is wet when she sleeps and
sometimes during the day. Lauren still does not
always want to use the toilet. Both still wear
diapers. Mary when she sleeps or we go out somewhere
for a long time or we travel. Lauren much of the
time.
There is no bad feeling about this in Holland. Same
in other places in Europe. I have many friends who
use diapers. I prefer Peaudouce. They make diapers
that fit older children. They even advertise with
pictures of boys and girls who are 5 or 6. The
Peaudouce Juniors come in two sizes. The largest fit
kids who are 40kg. 90 lbs, I think. Much bigger than
my Mary.
When we travel to Holland soon, Mary will wear Peaudouce.
This will not be an embarassment for her or me. Moms in
Holland do not think this is so unusual at 5 to wear a
diaper on the train, etc.
I will be glad to write to anyone who is interested. I
can tell them about my experience and the experience of
other moms I know.
Please excuse my English.

I just came online today. I found your message. (Actually, my husband
found it and showed it to me.)
We're taking Ben with us to Europe. He's 5. He wets the bed everynight.
Still has accidents.
We also have a 3yo. Justin. We were already planning on him wearing
diapers. He's still not potty trained.
I'm wondering if we can find the larger European diapers here anywhere.
I'd gladly mail order some for Ben.
Anyone have experience persuading a 5yo to wear a diaper at night and
while travelling? His dad thinks we should start now, so he gets used to
the idea.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions or thoughts.

It sounds like European parents are a lot more tolerant.

I have two girls, too. Heather is 5. Chloe just turned 4 this month.
Similar situation. Heather bedwets and daywets. Chloe still isn't
enthusiastic about using the potty.
I also have a home daycare in Vermont. Bedwetting and daywetting
aren't all that uncommon at 5 as some would believe.

Heather wears a diaper when she sleeps. While it may not work for
everyone, it works for us.
I took the girls to Disney World in November. I also took my neice,
Veronica. She's a few months younger than Heather. She also
bedwets.
I used diapers. Veronica grouched a little. She wears Pull-Ups at home
when she sleeps or they go somewhere for several hours. She pouted a
little on the way to the airport. She also fell asleep on the plane and
tinkled
in it. No more pouts. Diapers made the trip a lot less stressful.
Pull-Ups
are a bummer when you travel. You have to take off all their clothes. I
can
diaper my girls standing up in a stall unless we have a BM to contend with.
(Chloe only, gratefully). Heather and Veronica were pretty good about
using
the potty, too. We had accidents. Sure. But they also used the potty.
If I were going to Europe, I'd follow your example, Kami.

She says that we are treating her like a baby but we just tell her she will
stop weaing nappies when she learns how to use a potty. She seems a bit old to
be sitting on a potty but we believe in doing it the right way and if she can
still fill a nappy she can sit on a potty.
My friend's daughter, who has just turned eight, went through a stage of
bedwetting a couple of months ago and she started putty a cloth nappy on her.
I told her that it was ridiculus that an 8yo was wearing a nappy but after
about two weeks of wearing a nappy at night and during the day, which she really
hated she had stopped filling her nappy. She even made her sit on a potty!!!
Could you imagine an 8yo sitting on a potty or even walking around in a cloth
nappy!!!

A 6 year old who is still having daytime control problems should be
taken to the doctor to rule out physical problems. Perhaps she
physically CANNOT control her bladder, in which case, you need
some medical advice. In North America, we have pull-up type diapers that
resemble underwear and can't be noticed under clothing. I think making a
6 year old wear a diaper to school is punative and humiliating.
Diaper wearing can also retard training because it is not uncomfortable
enough - particularly with modern disposables. Our local daycare banned
the use of daytime diapers and pull ups - for many kids who are
physically able to use the bathroom, wet pants, socks and shoes gives
them the message pretty quickly, as opposed to the comparitively dry and
comfortable pull ups. (Why bother going to the bathroom if it feels okay
just to do it where you stand?).
the above statement is very true a child needs to be check but checking lots of time will not
show a problem it will only show a problem in about 25 % of the cases but that does not mean the
the child is doing it on purpose

sounds like your day care is in the wrong country and time period you need to go back in time to
germany and under hitler the perfect child heel all the others were killed so you did not have
to worry about any other type.

no or have know very few kids that have ever liked wet pants you sound like my parents when i
was growing up and i will not tell you what i throught of them ok beside do not think you would
understand what life is like to not be blond hair and blue eyed
pulls ups are ok but diapers are a heel of a lot easy to change on a person the his clothing is

Ah, this brings back memories of our trip to Holland in 1990.
The canel tour we took had sensitive tour guides, so when we floated by
the red light district, the tour guide only did the spiel in Dutch,
sparing the ears of our 8 year old.
However, as we got off the tour boat, we were treated to the edifying
sight of a junkie shooting up on the steps. (And my opinions about
legalizing drugs did a 180.)
Yes, we have junkies in Baltimore, I'm sorry to say. But they are not
shooting up at Harborplace.
Holland was also the only place in Europe where the chemists were
barricaded behind bullet-proof plexiglas. The only other place I've seen
that are the worst sections of Baltimore. Guess no one told the chemists
that when drugs are legalized they won't be robbed just to get
drugs.--Eva Whitley

A MEN! I really feel sorry for the kids of some of these parents on
here..

I bought Pampers for the trip. 13 hour drive to the Keys. Resort hotel
bed. Etc.
Everything worked out wonderfully. Erin gave me no difficulty at all.
She giggled when I showed her one the night before we left. We climbed in
the car at 6:30 AM. I got out a dry Pamper for the trip. Not one bit of
fussing. I told her it was a kong trip. Potties were a long way away
sometimes. She was likely to fall asleep a lot.
It made the trip a lot less stressful for everyone. She stayed dry,
laundry wasn't a big deal, etc.
It worked for us.
Thanks.

I'm not the original poster, but I too have a son who wakes up wet at
night. He's 5yo and is still waking up wet about 1 - 2 nights a week.
Sometimes more. When he was 4 like your son, he was waking wet 5 or 6
nights.
I have him wearing the Walmart version of Pullups at night. I haven't
had problems with him wetting through like I did the Pampers version.
It might be worth a try for you - they're also less expensive!
I've actually read that a lot of boys still have this problem at 7 and
8. And you're right, don't make a big deal out of it. It's not like he
has any real control over it. However, to get over the "hump" in having
him wet all the time, we started waking him just before we went to bed
to have him go potty again. We did that for about a month and it made a
big difference in wetness frequency.
Also, check with your mother-in-law to see if your husband was a late
bloomer. It seems to be an inherited trait.

Now you have, my 5 yr old son still wet the bed sometimes, I would say
about 2-3 times a month. He wore pullups to bed until he was 4 and
was soaked every morning. I decided to give underwear at night a try.
To my surprise he was not wetting nearly as much at night. Maybe even
in their sleep they feel it's ok to wet while wearing pull ups so
don't bother to wake up and get out of bed. I think more 5 yr olds
then parents will admit still wet the bed on occassion he will most
likely grow out of it. It would not hurt trying underwear after all
the bed is getting wet even with the pull ups. One more thing he
still has the occasional day accident at home and school. No big deal
we always keep spare clothes at the school.

Bedwetting isn't considered a problem until age 6, but I would recomend
having him seen by a doctor anyway (If you haven't done so already) other
than that, I'd suggest a bedpad to protect the mattress and alot of love
and support! As for pull-ups leaking, Try goodnights or a youth diaper.

You can try these...
Send him to restroom just before bed.
Also, no drinks an hour before bed time.
