Does anyone know the lyrics to the song containing the line:

"And they fam and they fam all over the dam"?

My son, Christopher (2.5 years) heard it at daycare and wants me to
sing it. Any help will be appreciated.

Three Little Fishes! One of my favorites for singing to my daughter.

Down in the meadow in the itty bitty pool,
Swam three little fishes and the mama fishy too,
"Swim", said the mama fish, "swim if you can"
And they swam and they swam right over the dam.

Boop, boop, didum, dadum, whatachoo (*)
Boop, boop, didum, dadum, whatachoo
Boop, boop, didum, dadum, whatachoo
And they swam and they swam right over the dam.

"Careful", said the mama fish, "or you'll get lost",
But they three little fishes didn't want to be bossed,
So the three little fishes went out on a spree,
And they swam and they swam right out to the sea.

Boop, boop, didum, dadum, etc.

"Whee" said the fishes, "now here's a lot of fun",
So they swam and they swam till the day was done,
They swam and they swam, it was all a lark,
When all of a sudden they spotted a shark,

(lots more that I can't quite remember)

(*) this is my approximation of the nonsense words sung here. You can make
up your own!

Unfortunately, I can't convey the tune over the net. Enjoy!

Thanks to everyone who responded with lyrics and info about the song
which I thought contained "And they fam and they fam all over the dam"
but which actually includes "And they swam and they swam all over the
dam". I don't know where I got the idea that it was pronounced "fam"
in the song.

Anyway, I remember the tune so all I needed was the words. I'm sure
my son will enjoy it. Thanks again. For anyone else who might be
interested, the lyrics are:

Down in the meadow in an itty bitty pool
Swam three little fishies and the mama fishy too
Swim, said the mama fishy, swim if you can
And they swam and they swam all over the dam

Boop boob diddle diddle waddum choo!
Boop boob diddle diddle waddum choo!
Boop boob diddle diddle waddum choo!

And they swam and they swam all over the dam.

That is how Sharon, Lois and Bram pronounce it on their "Mainly Mother
Goose" album (which I have heard over and over and over and...)

I believe the lyric is " and they swam, and they swam all over the dam." I
believe it is from Sesame Street but I'm not positive.

I'll probably have this running through my head for the next week. It's as bad
as a few of the Barney tunes.

Could it be:

Down in the Meadow in an itty bitty pool,
swam three little fishies and a momma fishy too.
Swim said the momma fishy,
Swim if you can...
So they swam, swam, swam right over the dam.
Beep, boop, wottom, dottom, wottom chew,
So they swam, swam, swam right over the dam.

That's all that I know of it, maybe (hopefully) someone knows
more.

Someone mentioned this is on a current Barney tape, or might be from
Sesame Street.

My parents sang this song to me 30 years ago, as an 'oldie'! I am not
sure, but I think it dates back to the 1940s. I have heard what I
think is the original several times, on oldies collections. In my
house, it often came up right after Mairzy Doates (sp?).

SS may have *done* it but it is far, far older; I have a tape of reissued
Glenn Miller recording of it. It has a female singer sing a verse, then
a male singer repeats it in baby-talk. I haven't the words here, but I as near
as I remember:

1. Down in the meadow/in an itty-bitty pool/swam three little fishies,/
and a momma fishie too./"Swim," said the momma fishie,"swim if you can."/
And they swam and they swam all over the dam!

2. The three little fishies all cried out "Whee!"/And they swam and they
swam,/till they got out to sea./They swam and they swam,/and it was a lark.
till all of a sudden/--they saw a shark!

3. (I can't remember the third verse, but it tells of how the "three little
fishies" flead the shark and finally got back to the pool "and they swam and
they swam/BACK over the dam.")

The message of the song may be that the outside world may be exciting and
alluring, but it is also dangerous, and best to stay home, and if you ever
leave, get back as quickly as you can. A powerful message for the time, I
would say.
